The easiest way in — or a trip in its own right
Most journeys through Sri Lanka begin and end in Colombo, and most travellers rush straight past it. This four-day escape makes the case for staying a little longer: a working capital of Buddhist temples, Dutch-era streets, wholesale markets and some of the best street food on the island, followed by a slower day on the coast at Negombo, where the fishing fleets that supply half the country's seafood come in each morning.
Day one and two are Colombo — the riverside calm of Galle Face Green, the gilded stillness of the Gangaramaya Temple, and the organised chaos of Pettah's markets. Day three trades the city for the coast: Negombo's fish market at first light, a stretch of sand and swaying palms in the afternoon, and a seafood dinner to close it out. It's a short trip built to feel unrushed, whether it's your only stop in Sri Lanka or the first few days of something longer.

Gangaramaya Temple & Beira Lake
A late-19th-century Buddhist temple blending Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian and Chinese architecture, on the shore of Beira Lake — one of Colombo's most important religious sites and a working monastery, museum and library in one.
Pettah's markets
The commercial heart of old Colombo — street after street of wholesale spice, textile, gold and household-goods bazaars, plus the newer floating market on Beira Lake, all built on a grid of streets dating back to the Dutch era.
Colonial Colombo
The Galle Face Green promenade, the Old Dutch Hospital, Independence Memorial Hall and the mixed Dutch, British and Moorish architecture of the Fort and Pettah districts — a city shaped by four centuries of trade and colonial rule.
Negombo's fishing beach
One of Sri Lanka's largest fish markets, where traditional outrigger canoes still land their catch each morning, followed by a relaxed stretch of Negombo's palm-lined beach in the afternoon.
Your 4-day itinerary
A short, unrushed trip — city on one side, coast on the other — with breakfast daily and all listed transfers included.
You're met at Bandaranaike International Airport and transferred to your centrally located Colombo hotel. Settle in, then ease into the city at your own pace. As the heat softens, Galle Face Green — the ocean-side promenade at the heart of the city — is the natural first stop for an evening walk, street snacks and your first sea breeze.
After breakfast, a guided tour through Colombo's layered old town: the Gangaramaya Temple beside Beira Lake, the Old Dutch Hospital precinct, Independence Memorial Hall, and the market streets of Pettah — spices, textiles and the newer floating market among the stalls on the water. There's time for local food and a little browsing before the day winds down.
A road transfer up the coast to Negombo, timed for the morning trading at the fish market — one of the busiest in Sri Lanka, where the day's catch is auctioned straight off the outrigger canoes. The afternoon is for the beach: a stretch of sand and swaying palms with time to swim, walk, or simply sit with a fresh coconut, before a seafood dinner to close the day and the transfer back to Colombo.
Enjoy a final breakfast and, depending on your flight, a little free time for last-minute shopping or a relaxed morning by the water. You're then transferred to the airport for your onward journey — or, if you'd like to extend, we can add nights in Negombo or link this trip to the hill country, the cultural triangle or the south coast.

Best time to visit
Colombo and the west coast are warm and tropical year-round, with a wetter southwest monsoon roughly May to September. The drier months are generally more comfortable for walking and the beach — we'll advise on timing for your dates when you enquire.
Currency
The Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Cards are widely accepted in Colombo's hotels and malls; carry some cash for markets, tuk-tuks, hawker stalls and small vendors.
Dress code
Colombo is a modern, easygoing city, but modest cover-ups (shoulders and knees) are expected at the Gangaramaya Temple and other religious sites, along with removing shoes and hats before entering.
Negombo fish market timing
Trading is busiest in the first couple of hours after sunrise, when the overnight fleet returns and the auction is at its most intense — worth the early start. The market is typically quiet or closed on Sundays.
What to pack
Light, breathable clothing, comfortable walking shoes, a rain layer, sun protection, swimwear for Negombo's beach, and a reusable water bottle. Modest cover-ups are handy for temple visits.

If you'd rather slow it further or add a beach night in Negombo, that's an easy extension.
