Dhigurah is a local island in South Ari Atoll — meaning "long island" in Dhivehi, and it earns the name, stretching nearly four kilometres along a narrow ribbon of sand with around 600 residents. Unlike a private-island resort, this is a real, inhabited Maldivian community: fishing dhonis on the beach, a working village at the northern end, and some of the best-value guesthouse diving and snorkelling anywhere in the country.
What makes Dhigurah genuinely rare is what's offshore. South Ari Atoll is one of only three whale shark sanctuaries in the Maldives, and the only place in the world with a resident, year-round juvenile whale shark population rather than a seasonal migration — researched and monitored by the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme, based right here on the island. Add reef manta rays, colourful thila dive sites, and an endless sandbank that was named among the world's 50 best beaches, and six days here covers a very different — and very authentic — side of the Maldives.

Year-round whale sharks
South Ari Atoll is home to the only documented resident, year-round juvenile whale shark population in the world — monitored by the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme, based on Dhigurah itself.

Unlike a resort island, Dhigurah is home to a genuine fishing community — traditional dhoni boats, a working harbour, and the chance to join a local night fishing trip.
Your 6-day itinerary

You're met at Velana International Airport in Malé and transferred onward to Dhigurah — by speedboat, or a short domestic flight to Maamigili followed by a quick boat crossing. Settle into your guesthouse, then take a first walk down the island's famous beach as the sun goes down.
A relaxed first full day: a walking orientation through Dhigurah's village, past the harbour where the local dhoni fishing boats come in, and out to the designated "bikini beach" for a first snorkel on the house reef.
The main event: a boat excursion into the South Ari Marine Protected Area, where the crew watches the surface for whale sharks before you slip in to snorkel alongside them at a respectful distance. Sightings are frequent here, though — as with any wild encounter — never guaranteed.
A second marine excursion out to South Ari's well-known coral pinnacles — sites like Kudarah Thila and Broken Rock — for reef snorkelling or diving among soft coral, reef sharks and, seasonally, manta rays. Certified divers can upgrade this to a two-tank dive day.
A morning boat trip to a nearby sandbank for swimming in impossibly clear, shallow water, then the rest of the day left open — relax on the beach, arrange an optional sunset fishing trip with local fishermen, or simply do nothing at all.
Enjoy a final breakfast and a last walk on the beach before transferring back to Malé — by speedboat, or via Maamigili — for your onward flight. Prefer to extend with a resort stay elsewhere in the Maldives? We can build that in.

Before you go
Best time to visit
Whale sharks are present year-round, so there's no wrong season to go. The dry northeast monsoon (roughly December–April) tends to bring calmer seas and clearer surface visibility — we'll advise on timing for your dates.
Currency
The Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), though US dollars are widely accepted for tours, dives and guesthouse bills. Cards are accepted at most guesthouses; carry some cash for small vendors.
Local island, not a resort
Dhigurah is an inhabited local island under Maldivian law: alcohol isn't sold or permitted outside licensed resorts, and swimwear is restricted to a designated "bikini beach" — modest dress is expected in the village itself.
Whale shark code of conduct
To protect the sharks and keep encounters sustainable, guides follow a strict code: no touching, no flash photography, a minimum distance, and limited swimmers in the water at once. We brief every guest before the excursion.
What to pack
Reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard for sun protection while snorkelling, a light cover-up for the village, and any dive certification card if you plan to dive. Snorkel gear is provided on excursions.
Visas & documents
Entry requirements depend on your passport. Most nationalities receive a free 30-day visa on arrival in the Maldives, but please check based on your nationality — we're happy to point you in the right direction.

Yes — that's a starting price, per person, for the 6-day itinerary based on twin-share guesthouse accommodation. It covers your stay, daily breakfast, airport and listed transfers, the marine excursions in the itinerary, selected entrance fees and local assistance. The final figure depends on your travel dates, guesthouse choice, group size and whether you'd like it private, so we confirm an exact quote when you enquire.
Are we guaranteed to see whale sharks?
No responsible operator can guarantee a wild animal sighting. What makes South Ari Atoll unusual is that its whale sharks are resident year-round rather than seasonal migrants, which makes encounters considerably more likely here than almost anywhere else in the world — but they remain wild animals, and sightings can never be promised.
Is alcohol available on Dhigurah?
No. Dhigurah is a local, inhabited island under Maldivian law, and alcohol is only sold and served on licensed resort islands. If this matters to your trip, tell us and we can build in a resort stay as part of your itinerary.
Are international flights included?
No — international flights into Malé aren't included unless we've specifically stated so in your quote. We arrange your onward transfer from Malé to Dhigurah, whether by speedboat or via a short domestic flight to Maamigili.
