The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
Sri Lanka's most venerated Buddhist shrine, housing what is believed to be a tooth relic of the Buddha within the former royal palace complex in Kandy. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, its Kandyan architecture, carved wooden ceilings and daily rituals make it the spiritual centre of the city.
Ceylon tea country, Nuwara Eliya
Known as "Little England" for its colonial architecture and cool climate at nearly 1,900 metres, Nuwara Eliya sits at the heart of Sri Lanka's tea-growing highlands. Walk between working estates, watch the hand-plucking and processing, and taste Ceylon tea at the source.
The Nine Arch Bridge
A stone-and-brick viaduct built without a single piece of steel, spanning the jungle near Demodara on the historic Kandy–Ella railway. One of the most photographed spots in the country, especially with a train crossing overhead.
Little Adam's Peak
An easy, well-marked walk from Ella through tea fields to a summit with sweeping views over Ella Rock, Ella Gap and the valley beyond — one of Sri Lanka's most rewarding hikes for the effort it takes.

You're met on arrival and transferred inland to Kandy, a scenic drive of roughly three to three and a half hours [[CONFIRM]] through the lowland countryside and into the hills. Settle into your hotel, then take an easy evening stroll around Kandy Lake as the city lights come up around it — the gentlest possible introduction to the hill country ahead.
A guided morning at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, set within the former royal palace complex beside Kandy Lake, followed by time in the surrounding grounds and museum. In the afternoon, most itineraries add the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya nearby, with its avenues of giant trees and orchid houses. In the evening, a traditional Kandyan dance performance — drumming, fire and acrobatic routines rooted in centuries of Kandyan court tradition.
A scenic transfer up into the highlands, climbing steadily through terraced hillsides as the air cools. En route, stop at a working tea estate and factory to see the hand-plucking, withering and rolling process, and taste Ceylon tea where it's grown. Arrive in Nuwara Eliya — "Little England" — by afternoon, with time to explore its colonial-era streets, Gregory Lake and gardens before dinner.
Onward to Ella through some of Sri Lanka's most celebrated mountain scenery — many travellers do this leg on the famous Nuwara Eliya–to–Ella train, threading past tea plantations, waterfalls and cloud-wrapped valleys [[CONFIRM]] transfer mode against your dates and seat availability, with a private road transfer as the alternative. Settle into Ella by afternoon, then take the gentle walk up Little Adam's Peak for views over Ella Rock and the valley as the light softens.
A final morning in Ella starts at the Nine Arch Bridge, best visited early before the crowds — with a chance to see a train cross if timing allows. After breakfast, you're transferred onward for your departure; note that Ella sits some distance from Colombo, so this leg is typically a longer drive [[CONFIRM]] staged via Kandy or arranged as a direct transfer, depending on your flight time.

Before you go
Best time to visit
The hill country is pleasant most of the year, with the driest and clearest conditions generally from December to March and again around July–August. Nuwara Eliya and Ella can be misty or rainy year-round, so pack for changeable weather regardless of season.
Currency
The Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Cards are accepted in Kandy and larger Ella hotels; carry cash for tea estate tours, small guesthouses, tuk-tuks and local restaurants along the route.
It gets cold up here
Nuwara Eliya sits at nearly 1,900 metres and can feel genuinely cold in the evenings and early mornings — a real contrast to Sri Lanka's coast. Pack a warm layer; most hotels don't have air conditioning because they don't need it.
Temple etiquette
Shoulders and knees covered, shoes and hats removed before entering the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and other religious sites. Modest, respectful dress is expected throughout the visit.
What to pack
Layers for a wide temperature range, sturdy walking shoes for Little Adam's Peak and the Nine Arch Bridge tracks, a light rain layer, and a reusable water bottle. Sunscreen still matters at altitude.

Do we travel between Nuwara Eliya and Ella by train or by road?
Both are possible, and each has trade-offs. The hill-country train is one of Sri Lanka's most scenic rides but seats need to be booked well ahead and schedules can shift; a private road transfer is more flexible and covers the same ground at your own pace. We'll confirm the best option once we know your dates and how important the train experience is to you.
How far is it from Ella back to the airport?
Further than most travellers expect — Ella sits deep in the hill country, so the return to Colombo's airport is a longer transfer than the outbound leg to Kandy. We plan your departure time and route (direct or staged) around your actual flight, and will flag this clearly when we confirm your quote.
Are international flights included?
No — international flights aren't included unless we've specifically stated so in your quote. Most travellers fly into Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport; we arrange your transfers to match your flight times.
