Grand Sri Lanka Discovery
Twelve days across the island's four defining landscapes — the ancient Cultural Triangle, the hill-country tea trail by scenic train, a Yala wildlife safari, and the colonial ramparts of the south coast — with hotels, transfers and guided sightseeing arranged from your arrival to your final departure.
The whole island, without the guesswork of stitching it together yourself
Sri Lanka packs an unusual amount of contrast into a small footprint — ancient rock fortresses, misty tea hills, a national park with one of the world's highest leopard densities, and a fortified colonial coastline, all within a few hours' drive of each other. Most first-time visitors either rush it into a week that skips too much, or spend weeks piecing together drivers and hotels on their own. This twelve-day itinerary is built to cover the island properly, at a pace that still feels like a holiday.
You'll climb the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya and walk the cave temples of the Cultural Triangle, pay respects at Kandy's Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and wander the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, ride one of the world's most scenic rail journeys into the tea-covered hills around Ella, track leopards and elephants on safari in Yala National Park, and finish among the Dutch-built ramparts, lighthouse and boutique streets of Galle Fort.
Airport transfers, centrally located accommodation, daily breakfast and guided sightseeing are arranged throughout. Prefer to run it fully private, extend a region, or swap the pace for something slower? This itinerary is the starting point — every element can be tailored around you.
What you'll actually see
Sigiriya, the "Lion Rock"
A 5th-century rock fortress rising nearly 200 metres above the jungle, with frescoes, mirror-wall graffiti and the remains of a royal palace at its summit — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Asia's most striking archaeological climbs.
Kandy's Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
The last royal capital of Sri Lanka and home to the Sri Dalada Maligawa, said to house a relic of the Buddha — a working temple, still central to Sri Lankan Buddhist life, alongside the lakeside old town and Peradeniya's Royal Botanical Gardens.
The Kandy–Ella hill-country railway
Regularly ranked among the world's most scenic train rides — tea estates, waterfalls and pine forest sliding past the open doorways as the line climbs through Nanu Oya and Haputale into Ella.
Wildlife safari in Yala National Park
Sri Lanka's most visited national park and among the best places on Earth to see a leopard in the wild, alongside elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and prolific birdlife across its dry-zone scrub and lagoons.
Your 12-day itinerary
Four regions, at a pace that lets each one breathe — with breakfast daily and all listed transfers included.
You're met at Bandaranaike International Airport and transferred to your Colombo hotel. Settle in and rest after your flight, or ease into the city with an evening stroll along Galle Face Green as the sun goes down over the Indian Ocean.
A guided half-day tour through Colombo's mix of colonial and contemporary — the Gangaramaya Temple, the markets and mosques of Pettah, Independence Square, and the waterfront Fort district. The afternoon is free for shopping or rest before an early start tomorrow.
A scenic drive (around 4 hours) north to the Cultural Triangle, passing village life and paddy fields en route. Check into your Sigiriya-area hotel, with the afternoon free to relax by the pool before tomorrow's climb.
An early climb up Sigiriya Rock beats both the heat and the crowds — around 1,200 steps to the summit, past the famous frescoes and mirror wall, with sweeping views over the surrounding jungle. In the afternoon, visit the Dambulla Cave Temple, Sri Lanka's best-preserved cave-temple complex, carved into a granite outcrop and filled with Buddhist murals and statuary dating back over two thousand years.
A morning drive south to Kandy (around 2.5 hours), Sri Lanka's last royal capital, set around a tranquil lake. In the evening, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in time for the evening ritual, followed by a traditional Kandyan cultural dance performance.
A morning visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya — 147 acres of orchids, giant fig trees and the iconic Avenue of Royal Palms — before boarding the afternoon train for one of the world's most celebrated rail journeys, climbing through tea estates and waterfalls to Ella.
A full day in the tea-country village of Ella. Walk out to the Nine Arches Bridge, a colonial-era railway viaduct set among the tea bushes, tackle the gentle climb of Little Adam's Peak for panoramic valley views, and cool off at Ravana Falls on the way back into town.
A drive (around 3 hours) down from the hill country to the Yala region, dropping in elevation from tea estates to dry-zone scrub. Check into your safari-area hotel, with the afternoon free to relax before tomorrow's early game drives.
A full day of wildlife tracking with an experienced tracker and driver — a morning game drive at first light, when animals are most active, and a second drive in the late afternoon. Yala is best known for its Sri Lankan leopards, alongside elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and some of the richest birdlife on the island.
A scenic drive (around 3 hours) along the southern coastline to Galle, with the option to stop at a turtle hatchery or coastal viewpoint along the way. Check into your Galle-area hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure by the sea.
A guided walk through Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the best-preserved example of a fortified colonial city in South Asia — the ramparts, the lighthouse, Dutch-era churches and boutique-lined streets. The afternoon is free for the beach, a spa, or simply wandering the fort at your own pace.
Enjoy a final breakfast before transferring to Bandaranaike International Airport for your onward journey (around 2.5–3 hours from Galle). We'll time the transfer against your flight — an overnight in Colombo can be added for early departures. If you'd like to extend, we can add nights on the south coast or link this trip to a wider Sri Lanka or Indian Ocean itinerary.
Indicative itinerary. The exact order of activities, sightseeing and transfer times is confirmed at the time of booking and may adapt to train schedules, park opening hours, weather and local conditions. Wildlife is wild — sightings can never be guaranteed.

Before you go
Best time to visit
Sri Lanka has two monsoon systems, so somewhere on this route is in season almost year-round. December to March suits the west and south coast (Colombo, Galle, Yala) and the hill country best; we'll advise on the ideal window for your dates when you enquire.
Currency
The Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Cards are widely accepted in hotels and city restaurants; carry cash for entrance fees, markets, tuk-tuks and small vendors, especially outside Colombo.
Booking the scenic train
Reserved seats on the Kandy–Ella line are popular and sell out weeks ahead in peak season. We book this in advance as part of your itinerary — please confirm your travel dates as early as possible so we can secure seats.
Wildlife is wild
Leopards, elephants and sloth bears in Yala are free-roaming, and sightings — while common — are never guaranteed. Your tracker will do everything possible to find them; please follow park rules, keep noise down, and never ask the driver to leave the track.
What to pack
Light, breathable clothing and comfortable walking shoes for Sigiriya and Little Adam's Peak, a light layer for cooler evenings in the hill country, neutral colours for the safari, sun protection, and modest cover-ups for temple visits.
Visas & documents
Most nationalities need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before arrival. Requirements and fees vary by passport, so please check based on your own nationality before you travel — we're happy to point you to the right official source.
Sri Lanka, coast to hill country
Good to have answered
Is the US$1,399 price per person? What does it cover?
Yes — that's a starting price, per person, for the full 12-day itinerary based on twin-share accommodation. It covers your hotels, daily breakfast, airport and listed transfers, the sightseeing in the itinerary, selected entrance fees and local assistance. The final figure depends on your travel dates, hotel category, group size and whether you'd like it private, so we confirm an exact quote when you enquire.
Will we definitely see a leopard at Yala?
We give you the best possible chance — an experienced tracker, two game drives timed for peak activity, and a park with one of the highest leopard densities in the world. But these are wild animals in their natural habitat, so no responsible operator can guarantee a sighting. Elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and prolific birdlife are seen far more consistently.
Do I need to book the scenic train in advance?
Yes — reserved seats on the Kandy–Ella line are in high demand and sell out weeks ahead in peak season. We handle this booking as part of your itinerary, but the earlier you confirm your travel dates, the more certain we can be of securing the best seats.
Are international flights included?
No — international flights aren't included unless we've specifically stated so in your quote. Most travellers fly into Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport; we can advise on convenient routings and will arrange your airport transfers to match your flights.
Can this itinerary be shortened, extended or run privately?
Absolutely — this is a template, not a fixed package. Trim a region if you're short on time, add nights on the south coast, upgrade the hotels, or run the entire trip fully private with your own driver-guide throughout. Tell us what you have in mind and we'll shape it around you.
How much walking and physical activity is involved?
It's a moderate trip overall, with a few more active days. Sigiriya involves around 1,200 steps to the summit, and Little Adam's Peak is a gentle but genuine climb; Kandy, Galle and the train journey are easy-paced, and safari days are seated in a jeep. Tell us your fitness level and we can adjust the pace or suggest alternatives for the more active stops.
Do I need a visa for Sri Lanka?
Most nationalities need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) arranged online before you fly, rather than a visa-free entry. Requirements and fees vary by passport, so please verify based on your own nationality before you travel — we're glad to point you to the right official source.
How do I book or get a quote?
Send us an enquiry with your rough dates and traveller numbers and we'll come back with a tailored quote and next steps. There's no obligation, and no payment needed to get a proposal.
