Most people picture the Maldives as a single overwater villa on a private resort island. Maafushi is the other side of the story — a real, lived-in local island 27 km south of Malé in South Male Atoll, where the government's 2009 opening of local tourism first let travellers experience the same turquoise water and coral reefs from a guesthouse instead of a resort. It's now the most developed local island in the country, with more guesthouses and excursion operators than anywhere else — which means more choice, and better value, without giving up any of the scenery.
This six-day adventure uses Maafushi as your base for exactly the experiences the Maldives is known for: snorkelling the house reef straight off the beach, a boat out to a private sandbank for a few hours on your own strip of sand, and excursions across South Male Atoll — dolphin cruises, water sports, and day trips to nearby islands and reefs. Maafushi's own Bikini Beach, at the island's northern end, is where swimwear is welcome; the rest of the island keeps a modest, local dress code, which is part of what makes it feel like a real place rather than a resort bubble.

What you'll actually do
Snorkelling the house reef
Just a few steps off Maafushi's shore, the house reef puts coral and reef fish within easy reach — no boat required for your first swim, and full-day snorkelling safaris further out for a wider mix of marine life.
Sandbank picnics
A boat ride out to a private sandbank — a strip of pure white sand rising straight out of the lagoon, with nothing else on it — for swimming, photos and a picnic lunch in some of the clearest water in the atoll.
Water sports & dolphin cruises
Jet skis, banana boats, kayaking and paddleboarding off Maafushi's harbour, plus a sunset dolphin cruise across South Male Atoll — spinner dolphins are a regular sight in these waters.
Local island life
Unlike a private resort, Maafushi is a real Maldivian community — a fishing village turned tourism success story, with local cafés, mosques and streets to explore alongside the beach time.
Your 6-day itinerary
A relaxed, activity-led pace based entirely on Maafushi — with breakfast daily and your transfers and core excursions included.
You're met at Velana International Airport and transferred by speedboat to Maafushi — around 30 to 35 minutes across open water. Check in to your guesthouse, then head straight for Bikini Beach at the island's northern end for your first swim and sunset.
A relaxed day to find your feet: a walk through the village streets, a swim and snorkel on the house reef right off the beach, and time to browse the harbourfront's dive shops and cafés. As night falls, one of the floating bars moored just offshore is the place for a sundowner — alcohol isn't sold on the island itself.
A short boat ride to one of the sandbanks off Maafushi — a stretch of pure white sand with nothing else on it, surrounded by shallow, brilliantly clear water. A picnic lunch, a few hours of swimming and photos, then back to the island by mid-afternoon.
A boat trip further into South Male Atoll, with a stop at Guraidhoo — another local island known for its surf breaks, snorkelling and laid-back pace — before an evening sunset cruise in search of spinner dolphins, a regular sight in these channels.
A free day built around water sports at Maafushi's harbour — jet skis, banana boats, kayaking and paddleboarding are all on offer, or trade the adrenaline for a resort day pass at a nearby South Male property for pool, beach and lunch access. Either way, the day is yours to shape.
Enjoy a final breakfast and a last swim before your speedboat transfer back to Male and Velana International Airport for your onward flight. Prefer to extend with a resort stay or another local island? We can build that in.

Before you go
Best time to visit
Warm and tropical year-round. The dry season (roughly December to April) generally brings the calmest seas and best visibility for snorkelling; the wetter southwest monsoon runs May to November. We'll advise on timing for your dates.
Currency
The Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), though US dollars are widely accepted by guesthouses and excursion operators on Maafushi. Cards work at most hotels; carry some cash for smaller shops and independent excursions.
Dress code
Swimwear is only for the designated Bikini Beach at Maafushi's northern end. Everywhere else on the island — streets, harbour, shops, the mosque area — calls for modest dress covering shoulders and knees, as this is a local Maldivian community.
Alcohol
Maafushi is a local island, so alcohol isn't sold on the island itself. Floating bars moored just offshore, reachable by a short boat ride, are where visitors go for a drink.
Snorkelling gear
Most guesthouses and excursion operators can supply masks, snorkels and fins, but if you have your own well-fitted gear, bringing it is worth it for comfort on longer reef and sandbank days.
Visas & documents

Is Maafushi a resort island?
No — Maafushi is a local island with guesthouses and hotels, not a private resort. That's the appeal: the same clear water and coral reefs as a resort island, at a fraction of the price, with the option to add a day pass at a nearby private resort if you want that experience too.
Can I drink alcohol on Maafushi?
Not on the island itself — Maafushi is a local Maldivian community, so alcohol isn't sold there. Floating bars moored just offshore, a short boat ride away, are where visitors go for a drink; we can point you to these on arrival.
Are international flights included?
No — international flights aren't included unless we've specifically stated so in your quote. We can advise on convenient arrival times into Velana International Airport and arrange your speedboat transfer to Maafushi to match your flight.
