Malaysia Culinary & Cultural Journey
Seven days eating and exploring your way through three of Malaysia's most distinctive cities — Kuala Lumpur's hawker energy, Malacca's UNESCO heritage streets and Peranakan kitchens, and Penang's street art and legendary food scene — with your transfers, hotels and guided sightseeing handled from arrival to departure.
Three cities, one running theme — Malaysia at the table
Malaysia's food tells you everything about its history — Malay, Chinese, Indian, Peranakan and colonial influences layered into every hawker stall and heritage kitchen. This seven-day journey is built around that idea, moving between the three cities that show it best: Kuala Lumpur's round-the-clock street food scene, the UNESCO-listed heritage quarters and Peranakan cooking of Malacca, and Penang's George Town — widely regarded as having the best street food in the country, alongside some of Southeast Asia's most photographed street art.
You'll walk Jonker Street's night market and the Baba-Nyonya heritage houses of Malacca, hunt down George Town's murals and clan jetties, climb through the Kek Lok Si temple complex, and eat properly in all three cities — char kway teow, assam laksa, Sarawak-adjacent Malaysian classics and Peranakan specialities included. Airport transfers, centrally located hotels, daily breakfast and guided sightseeing are arranged for you throughout.
Prefer it fully private, want a hands-on cooking class added, or would rather slow down in one city than cover all three? Every element here can be tailored — this itinerary is the starting point, not the ceiling.
What you'll actually see (and eat)
Kuala Lumpur's hawker scene
A city that eats around the clock — from Jalan Alor's grilled satay and char kway teow to Chinatown's noodle houses and Little India's banana-leaf curries, with the Petronas Twin Towers skyline as a backdrop.
Malacca's UNESCO heritage streets
A World Heritage city where Portuguese, Dutch and British colonial layers meet Peranakan culture — Jonker Street, the red Dutch Stadthuys and Christ Church, and the Baba-Nyonya Heritage Museum's 19th-century mansion.
George Town's murals & clan jetties
A UNESCO heritage core where wall murals and steel-rod sculptures turn old shophouse streets into an open-air gallery, and the century-old Chew Jetty stilt village opens right onto the water.
Penang, Malaysia's food capital
Widely rated the country's best food city — char kway teow cooked over charcoal woks, assam laksa near Kek Lok Si, and nasi kandar at hawker centres that locals still queue for.
Your 7-day itinerary
Three cities, a food focus throughout, and breakfast daily with all listed transfers included.
You're met at Kuala Lumpur International Airport and transferred to your centrally located hotel. Settle in, then ease into the city at your own pace. In the evening, an optional wander through Jalan Alor's food lanes is the perfect introduction to Malaysian street food.
After breakfast, a guided city tour takes in the Petronas Twin Towers and KLCC park, the colonial architecture around Merdeka Square, and Chinatown's Central Market. The afternoon and evening are built around eating — a guided hawker crawl through Chinatown and Jalan Alor covering char kway teow, satay and other Malaysian street food staples.
A scenic drive (around two hours) south to Malacca, a UNESCO World Heritage city. Walk the red Dutch Stadthuys and Christ Church at Dutch Square, the A Famosa fortress ruins and St Paul's Hill, then step inside the Baba-Nyonya Heritage Museum for a look at Peranakan life. Lunch is a Baba-Nyonya speciality — the distinct Chinese-Malay fusion cuisine unique to this city — before an evening at Jonker Street's night market and a return drive to Kuala Lumpur.
A short domestic flight to Penang, with transfer to your George Town hotel. The afternoon is a walking introduction to the UNESCO heritage zone — Armenian Street, the shophouse-lined lanes, and your first hunt for the city's famous street art murals.
A full day covering Penang's landmark sights: the century-old Chew Jetty stilt village on the water, more of George Town's mural trail, and Kek Lok Si — one of Southeast Asia's largest Buddhist temple complexes, with its multi-tiered pagoda and hillside Guan Yin statue.
Penang is widely rated Malaysia's best food city, and today is built around proving it: a guided hawker centre crawl through local favourites — char kway teow cooked over charcoal, assam laksa, and nasi kandar — followed by a hands-on Malaysian cooking class where you learn to make a few of the dishes yourself.
Enjoy a final breakfast and, depending on your flight, a little free time for last-minute shopping among Armenian Street's craft stores or a relaxed morning by the water. You're then transferred to Penang International Airport for your onward journey — or, if you'd like to extend, we can add nights in any of the three cities or link this trip to an island escape.

Before you go
Best time to visit
All three cities are warm and tropical year-round. Penang's driest, clearest months are roughly December to February; KL and Malacca see brief afternoon showers at other times. We'll advise on timing for your dates when you enquire.
Currency
The Malaysian Ringgit (MYR / RM). Cards are widely accepted in hotels and malls; carry cash for hawker stalls, night markets and small vendors in all three cities.
This trip is built around eating
Expect several guided hawker crawls and food-focused stops across the itinerary. Let us know of any dietary requirements or allergies in advance so guides can steer you to the right stalls.
Dress code
Kek Lok Si and the mosques and temples visited along the way are places of worship — shoulders and knees should be covered. Light, breathable clothing works well in the humidity.
Getting between cities
Kuala Lumpur to Malacca is a scenic road transfer of around two hours each way. Kuala Lumpur to Penang is covered by a short domestic flight — comfortable footwear and a light day bag make the connection days easier.
Visas & documents
Entry requirements depend on your passport. Many nationalities enter Malaysia visa-free for short stays, but please check based on your nationality — we're happy to point you in the right direction.
Heritage streets to hawker stalls
Good to have answered
Is the US$999 price per person? What does it cover?
Yes — that's a starting price, per person, for the 7-day itinerary based on twin-share accommodation. It covers your hotels, daily breakfast, airport and listed transfers, the sightseeing in the itinerary, selected entrance fees and local assistance. The final figure depends on your travel dates, hotel choice, group size and whether you'd like it private, so we confirm an exact quote when you enquire.
Are the hawker meals and cooking class included in the price?
Sightseeing, transfers and breakfast are included as standard. Guided hawker crawls, the Baba-Nyonya lunch and the cooking class are highlights of this itinerary and we'll confirm exactly what's bundled into your quote versus paid on the day — this varies by group size and is set out clearly before you book.
Are international flights included?
No — international flights aren't included unless we've specifically stated so in your quote. We can advise on convenient arrival times into Kuala Lumpur and departure from Penang to match your flights.
How do we get between Kuala Lumpur, Malacca and Penang?
Malacca is a day trip from Kuala Lumpur by road, around two hours each way. From Kuala Lumpur to Penang, we arrange a short domestic flight rather than a long road transfer, so you spend your time sightseeing and eating rather than travelling.
Can this itinerary be customised?
Absolutely — this is a template, not a fixed package. Spend longer in one city rather than covering all three, add nights, upgrade the hotels, run it fully private, or extend into a beach or island add-on. Tell us what you have in mind and we'll shape the trip around it.
Do I need a visa for Malaysia?
It depends on your nationality. Many travellers can enter Malaysia visa-free for short stays, but requirements change, so please verify based on your own passport before you travel. We're glad to point you to the right official source.
How do I book or get a quote?
Send us an enquiry with your rough dates and traveller numbers and we'll come back with a tailored quote and next steps. There's no obligation, and no payment needed to get a proposal.
