This six-day trip pairs Kuala Terengganu — a riverside capital of glittering mosques, old Chinatown shophouses and a market that's been trading batik and songket for generations — with a stay on Pulau Redang, the largest island in the Terengganu Marine Park archipelago.
Redang's waters hold more than 500 species of coral and 3,000 species of fish, along with resident green and hawksbill turtles and reef sharks. You'll spend your days snorkelling reef edges most travellers never reach, and your evenings on sand that empties out once the day-trip boats leave. What you'll actually see
World-class snorkelling
Redang's protected marine park holds over 500 species of coral and 3,000 species of fish. Snorkel straight off the beach or take a boat to the outer reefs, where visibility runs clear and the coral is some of the best-preserved in Malaysia.
Island beaches
Fine white sand, warm shallow water and a jungle-covered interior with no roads to speak of. The islands empty out once the day-trip boats leave for the mainland, leaving long stretches of beach to whoever's staying the night.
Turtles & reef life
Green and hawksbill turtles nest on the marine park's beaches and are commonly seen feeding just offshore. Blacktip reef sharks, rays and schools of reef fish round out some of the most consistent marine encounters on Malaysia's coast.
Kuala Terengganu's coastal culture
The glass-and-steel Crystal Mosque on the river, 300-year-old Chinatown shophouses, and Pasar Payang — the central market where batik, songket and Terengganu's famous keropok lekor are traded daily.
Your 6-day itinerary

You're met at Sultan Mahmud Airport and transferred to your hotel in Kuala Terengganu. Settle in, then spend the afternoon getting your bearings along the riverside, with the glittering Crystal Mosque lit up across the water as evening falls.
After breakfast, transfer to the jetty for the ferry crossing to Pulau Redang. Check in to your island accommodation, then ease into the pace of the place — a first swim, a walk along the beach, and your first look at the marine park's famously clear water before dinner.
A full day out on the water. A boat trip through the Terengganu Marine Park takes you to several snorkelling sites around Redang and its neighbouring islands — coral gardens, sheltered coves, and the chance to swim alongside green turtles and reef fish in some of the clearest water on this coast.
A day with nothing on it but the beach. Swim, read, walk the shoreline, or add an optional dive or a second snorkelling trip to a quieter reef. It's the easiest way to feel the appeal of this coast — long white sand, warm water, and very little else.
A final morning on the island before the ferry back to the mainland. In the afternoon, explore Kuala Terengganu's old Chinatown — shophouses dating back some 300 years — and Pasar Payang, the central market, for batik, songket and a taste of keropok lekor, the local fish snack.
Enjoy a final breakfast and, depending on your flight, a little free time for last-minute shopping. You're then transferred to the airport for your onward journey — or, if you'd like to extend, we can add island nights, swap in Perhentian instead of Redang, or link this trip to another stop on the peninsula.

Before you go
Seasonal closure
The east coast islands close for the Northeast Monsoon, broadly November to February — rough seas suspend ferries and most resorts shut down. The best window is roughly March to October, with June to August the calmest. This trip can only run outside the monsoon closure.
Currency
The Malaysian Ringgit (MYR / RM). Kuala Terengganu takes cards widely; on the island, ATMs and card acceptance are limited, so bring enough cash for meals, extras and souvenirs.
Marine park etiquette
Redang is a protected marine park — never stand on coral, touch marine life or take shells or coral as souvenirs; both damage the reef and can carry fines. Reef-safe sunscreen is strongly recommended.
What to pack
Swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard for long snorkelling days, light clothing, and a dry bag for cameras and phones on boat transfers. Bring your own mask and snorkel if you have a preferred fit.
Island facilities
Island accommodation is simpler than the mainland — expect fan or basic air-con rooms, limited wifi, and early meal times built around the ferry schedule. It's part of the appeal, but worth setting expectations for.

Can I do this trip on the Perhentian Islands instead of Redang?
Yes — Perhentian is a straightforward swap and suits a more social, backpacker-friendly atmosphere, particularly on Perhentian Kecil, while Perhentian Besar is quieter and more couple- and family-oriented. Redang tends to have calmer waters and more consistently preserved coral. Tell us your preference when you enquire and we'll build the itinerary around it.
When can this trip actually run?
Roughly March to October. Both Redang and the Perhentians close for the Northeast Monsoon — broadly November to February — when ferries stop and most resorts shut for the season. If your dates fall in that window, we'll suggest an alternative itinerary on Malaysia's west coast instead.
Do I need to know how to swim or dive?
Comfort in the water helps, but this itinerary is built around snorkelling, not diving — life jackets are available, and much of the best coral sits in shallow, calm water. Scuba diving can be added as an optional extra for certified divers or those wanting to try a beginner course.
Are international flights included?
