Maafushi, in South Malé Atoll around 30 km from the capital, is the country's original and best-known local-island destination — a working fishing community turned guesthouse hub, with its own designated swimwear beach, a lively guesthouse strip, and easy boat access to the snorkelling and sandbank trips the Maldives is famous for. You'll spend your days on the beach, in the water, and out on the atoll, based from a comfortable local guesthouse rather than a private villa.

Maafushi's white-sand beach
Powdery sand and clear, shallow water in the island's designated swimwear beach area — sunbeds, palm shade, and the classic Maldivian look, without a resort's day-pass fee.
Snorkelling & boat excursions
Half- and full-day boat trips out to South Malé Atoll's reefs and channels — turtles, nurse sharks and coral gardens are the regulars, with dolphin-watching and whale-shark trips available further afield.
A sandbank day out
A boat ride to one of South Malé Atoll's uninhabited sandbanks — a stretch of empty sand ringed by shallow, glassy water, usually the highlight photo of the whole trip.
Real Maldivian island life
Maafushi is a working local island, not a resort set-piece — a mosque, a market street, guesthouses run by island families, and daily life alongside the tourist trade.

You're met at Velana International Airport in Malé and transferred by speedboat to Maafushi, around 30–45 minutes away. Check in to your guesthouse, then head straight for the beach — your first look at the shallow, turquoise water Maafushi is known for.
A full day at your own pace on Maafushi's beach — swimming, sunbathing and a first snorkel off the house reef. In between, a wander through the island's market street and residential lanes gives a proper look at everyday life on a working Maldivian island.
A half-day boat trip out into South Malé Atoll, visiting two or three reef sites for the Maldives' real snorkelling — beyond the house reef is where the coral and marine life are at their best. Turtles, reef sharks and colourful reef fish are the usual sightings.
A short boat ride to one of the atoll's uninhabited sandbanks for a few hours away from the main island — swimming in shallow, glassy water with nothing but sand and horizon. The afternoon is left free back on Maafushi, or add an optional dolphin cruise for sunset.
Enjoy a final breakfast and a last stretch on the beach before your speedboat transfer back to Malé, timed to connect with your onward flight. Prefer to spend your last hours exploring Malé itself rather than heading straight to the airport? We can build that in.

Before you go
Best time to visit
Warm year-round, with the driest, calmest stretch running roughly November to April — the most popular window for beach days and boat excursions. We'll advise on timing for your dates when you enquire.
Currency
The Maldivian Rufiyaa, though US dollars are widely accepted on Maafushi for guesthouses, restaurants and excursions. Cards are accepted in most places; carry some cash for smaller shops.
Local island dress code
Maafushi is a conservative Muslim community. Swimwear is only worn at the designated Bikini Beach area; elsewhere on the island, modest dress — shoulders and knees covered — is expected of visitors, the same as any local town.
Alcohol
Alcohol isn't sold on local islands like Maafushi, in line with Maldivian law. Some guesthouses can arrange a trip to a nearby floating bar or a day pass to a resort island if that matters to you — ask us when you enquire.
Snorkelling, honestly
Maafushi's house reef is modest and has seen some coral degradation — the excellent snorkelling most photos show is a short boat ride away, which is why we've built an excursion day into the itinerary rather than relying on the beach alone.

Is the US$799 price per person? What does it cover?
Yes — that's a starting price, per person, for the 5-day itinerary based on twin-share guesthouse accommodation. It covers your Maafushi stay, daily breakfast, airport and boat transfers, the sightseeing in the itinerary, selected entrance fees and local assistance. The final figure depends on your travel dates, room category, group size and any excursions you add, so we confirm an exact quote when you enquire.
Is this the same as a resort-island Maldives holiday?
No — and we'd rather be upfront about that than have you arrive expecting one. This is a local-island guesthouse holiday on Maafushi: real beaches, real reefs, real boat trips, at a fraction of a private resort's price. What you don't get is a private-island atmosphere, an overwater villa, or alcohol on the island. If that's what you're after, ask us about a resort-island package instead — this one is built for value.
Can I drink alcohol on Maafushi?
No — alcohol isn't sold on local islands under Maldivian law. Some guesthouses can arrange a trip to a nearby floating bar, or a resort day pass, if you'd like access to alcohol during your stay; let us know when you enquire and we'll build it in.
Are international flights included?
No — international flights aren't included unless we've specifically stated so in your quote. All Maldives flights route through Malé's Velana International Airport; we handle your speedboat transfer to and from Maafushi to match your flight times.
