The Maldives is 1,192 coral islands scattered across 26 atolls in the Indian Ocean — the seventh-largest reef system on Earth, and home to more than 2,000 species of fish. Most first-time visitors see it from a beach chair; this itinerary is built for the ones who'd rather see it from underwater.
Seven days give you real time in the water: your resort or local island's house reef for easy, repeatable snorkelling, a programme of guided boat dives across the surrounding reefs and channels, and — season and location allowing — the chance to encounter manta rays, whale sharks and green turtles in the wild. Every dive is led by a local PADI-affiliated dive centre, so the sites, timing and safety briefing are handled for you.

Your house reef
Most Maldivian islands sit inside their own ring of reef, reachable by wading straight off the beach — the easiest, most repeatable snorkelling anywhere in the world, and often colourful enough to fill the whole week on its own.
Guided reef & channel dives
A programme of boat dives with a local dive centre, across coral gardens, current-swept channels and cleaning stations — suited to your certification level, from a first Discover Scuba experience to advanced drift diving.
Manta rays & whale sharks
The Maldives holds some of the world's best odds for both — reef manta rays are found across the atolls, whale sharks are sighted almost year-round around South Ari, and Baa Atoll's Hanifaru Bay hosts one of the planet's largest manta aggregations, seasonally, snorkel-only.
Turtles & reef life
Green and hawksbill turtles live resident on many reefs alongside reef sharks, eagle rays and over 2,000 recorded fish species — the Maldives' reefs are among the most biodiverse in the Indian Ocean.
Your 7-day itinerary
A week built around the water — with breakfast daily and all listed transfers included.
You're met at Velana International Airport in Malé and transferred onward to your resort or local island — by speedboat for closer atolls, or by scenic seaplane or a short domestic flight for those further afield. Settle in, and take your first swim over the house reef before dinner.
A briefing at the island's dive centre to confirm your certification level and plan the week's dives — or, for first-timers, a Discover Scuba session in shallow, supervised water. The afternoon is a guided snorkel of the house reef with a marine guide pointing out what's living on it.
A two-tank boat dive to nearby reef sites — coral gardens, overhangs and, conditions allowing, a manta cleaning station where rays circle to be tended by cleaner fish. Non-divers can join the same boat for surface snorkelling above the same sites.
Depending on your island's location and the season, a full-day excursion toward South Ari Atoll for a chance to snorkel with whale sharks, or toward Baa Atoll's Hanifaru Bay for its seasonal manta aggregation (snorkel-only, strictly regulated). We confirm the best option for your dates when you book.
A dive through one of the atoll's channels, where tidal current draws in bigger marine life — reef sharks, eagle rays and schooling fish. Non-divers or those preferring an easier day can instead take a dolphin cruise or a second relaxed reef snorkel.
An open day by design. Book another dive with the centre, snorkel the house reef once more at your own pace, or spend the day doing nothing at all on the beach — the choice is yours after five days in and around the water.
A final breakfast and, depending on your flight, a last swim over the house reef before transferring back to Malé for your onward journey. Note that scuba diving requires a minimum surface interval before flying — your dive centre will confirm the exact timing for your last dive.

Before you go
Best time to visit
Warm, tropical waters year-round. November to April (northeast monsoon) brings the calmest seas and clearest visibility; June to November is peak season for manta aggregations at Hanifaru Bay. We'll advise on timing for your priorities.
Do I need to be certified?
Not necessarily. Most island dive centres offer a supervised Discover Scuba experience for beginners, alongside full PADI Open Water certification courses and dives for the already-certified. Confirm your level with us when you enquire so we can match the right island and dive programme.
Getting to your island
From Malé, transfers run by speedboat (closer atolls, 15–60 minutes), seaplane (further atolls, daytime only) or a short domestic flight plus speedboat for the far south. We arrange the right transfer for your chosen island.
Wildlife is wild
Manta rays, whale sharks and turtles are wild animals — encounters are likely on this itinerary but never guaranteed. Keep a respectful distance, never touch or chase marine life, and follow your guide's instructions at all times.
Currency
The Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), though US dollars and cards are widely accepted at resorts and dive centres. Carry a little local cash if visiting a local (non-resort) island.
Visas & documents
Most nationalities receive a free 30-day visa on arrival in the Maldives, but please confirm based on your own passport before travelling. If choosing a local (non-resort) island, note that alcohol and modest dress rules differ from resort islands — we'll brief you on this when you book.

Is the US$1,799 price per person? What does it cover?
Yes — that's a starting price, per person, for the 7-day itinerary based on twin-share accommodation. It covers your island stay, daily breakfast, airport and intercity transfers, the listed reef experiences, selected entrance fees and local assistance. Individual dives, Discover Scuba sessions and PADI certification courses are arranged and priced separately through the island dive centre. The final figure depends on your travel dates, island choice, group size and diving plans, so we confirm an exact quote when you enquire.
Do I need to be a certified diver to book this?
No. This itinerary works for certified divers, complete beginners and everyone in between. Most island dive centres run supervised Discover Scuba sessions for first-timers and full PADI Open Water courses if you'd like to certify during your stay. Non-divers can snorkel the same reefs from the surface. Tell us your level and we'll match the itinerary and island to it.
Will we definitely see whale sharks or manta rays?
We plan the excursion for the best possible odds — South Ari Atoll for near-year-round whale shark sightings, or Baa Atoll's Hanifaru Bay during its seasonal manta aggregation — but these are wild animals in open ocean, and no responsible operator can guarantee a sighting. Note that Hanifaru Bay is snorkel-only; scuba diving isn't permitted there.
Speedboat or seaplane — which island will I go to?
This depends on which island or resort you choose and how far it sits from Malé — closer atolls use a speedboat transfer, while more distant ones use a scenic seaplane (daytime only) or a short domestic flight. We'll confirm the transfer type and timing once your island is selected.
Are international flights included?
No — international flights aren't included unless we've specifically stated so in your quote. We can advise on convenient arrival times into Malé and arrange your onward island transfer to match your flights.
Can this itinerary be customised or run privately?
