The Maldives works differently to most family holidays: you fly into Malé, transfer once to your resort island, and then simply stay there for the rest of the trip. There's no daily sightseeing to plan and no packing up to move on — the island itself is the destination, with everything from the beach to the dinner table a short walk from your villa.
This itinerary is built around that rhythm. After arriving into Velana International Airport on the island of Hulhulé, a speedboat or seaplane transfer arranged by your resort takes you directly to your island — the transfer method depends on how far the resort sits from Malé. From there, the days are yours: calm lagoon swimming, a house reef alive with reef fish for snorkelling, sandbank and dolphin excursions, and a kids' club or family activities program at resorts set up for it.

Your 6-day itinerary
One transfer out, one transfer back — everything in between is island time, with breakfast daily included.
You're met at Velana International Airport and guided to your resort transfer — a speedboat for nearer islands, or a seaplane for resorts further out in the atolls. On arrival, check in to your villa and settle into island time; the rest of the day is free to explore the resort and its beach.
A full day at your own pace — the beach, the pool, and a first snorkel out over the house reef with the family. Younger children can join the kids' club for a session while parents have some time to themselves.
A day built around the water — options typically include a glass-bottom boat ride, stand-up paddleboarding in the calm lagoon, and a family-friendly snorkelling excursion to a nearby reef, arranged through the resort's watersports centre.
A half-day excursion to a nearby sandbank for a picnic and a swim in open, shallow water, followed by an evening dolphin-watching cruise as pods often surface in the channel waters around sunset.
A day left open by design. Linger on the beach, book a spa treatment, let the kids spend a second day at the club, or simply do nothing at all — the last full day is yours to shape.

Best time to visit
Warm and tropical year-round, with the driest, sunniest stretch typically from around December to April. The wetter southwest monsoon runs roughly May to November — still very swimmable, with lower rates.
Currency
The Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), though US dollars and cards are widely accepted at resorts. Most resort stays run on a room-and-board basis with little need for cash day to day.

Most Maldives resorts occupy an entire private island — there's no "town" to visit and nothing to commute to. This is a stay-and-relax holiday by design, which suits families well.
Getting there
All resort transfers are arranged directly by your resort once your international flight details are shared — usually a speedboat for closer islands, or a seaplane (daylight hours only) for resorts further into the atolls.
Snorkelling with kids
House reefs vary in depth and current between resorts. Life jackets and reef shoes are worth packing, and it's worth asking your resort about the calmest snorkelling spots for younger children.

Is the Maldives suitable for young children?
Very — many resorts are specifically set up for families, with kids' clubs, shallow lagoon swimming, family villas and children's menus. The main thing to plan around is the resort transfer: speedboats are straightforward with young kids, while a seaplane transfer, though memorable, involves a wait at the seaplane terminal and a noisier, non-air-conditioned cabin.
Are international flights included?
No — international flights into Malé aren't included unless we've specifically stated so in your quote. We can advise on convenient arrival times and will arrange your resort transfer to match your flight.
What's the difference between a speedboat and seaplane transfer?
Speedboats serve resorts within roughly 80 km of Malé and run 24 hours a day. Seaplanes connect to resorts further out in the atolls, fly only during daylight hours, and typically involve some wait time at the seaplane terminal — but offer striking aerial views of the atolls as part of the experience. Which one you'll use is determined entirely by your resort's location, and we'll confirm this once your resort is chosen.
