The Maldives most travellers never see
Overwater villas get all the postcards, but they're only one way to experience the Maldives. This seven-day journey is built around the country's local islands — inhabited communities that opened to guesthouse tourism from 2009, giving independent travellers real access to the reef, the sandbanks and everyday Maldivian life at a fraction of a private resort's cost.
You'll base yourself on Maafushi, the liveliest of the local islands — a walkable strip of guesthouses, dive shops and cafés built around a designated swimming beach — and use it as a launchpad for the things the Maldives is famous for: boat trips to uninhabited sandbanks, reef snorkelling with turtles and reef sharks, and, seasonally, excursions toward the whale-shark grounds of South Ari Atoll. A day in Malé rounds out the trip with the golden-domed Grand Friday Mosque, the bustling fish market and the pace of the country's tiny, crowded capital.

What you'll actually see
Maafushi & Bikini Beach
The busiest local island in the Maldives — a walkable strip of guesthouses, dive centres and beach cafés, with one of the country's only swimwear-permitted beaches right on the doorstep.
Uninhabited sandbanks
A short boat ride to a strip of sand with nothing else on it — clear shallows for swimming and snorkelling, a picnic lunch, and the classic Maldives postcard shot, without another resort in sight.
Reef snorkelling
Boat excursions into South Malé Atoll's coral gardens and turtle points — colourful reef fish, resident turtles and, on the right day, nurse sharks and rays in clear, calm water.
Malé & local culture
A city day in the capital — the golden-domed Grand Friday Mosque, the 17th-century coral-stone Hukuru Miskiy, and the fish market, where the day's catch and the country's maritime life are on full display.
Your 7-day itinerary
A relaxed, island-time pace — with breakfast daily and all listed transfers included.
You're met at Velana International Airport and transferred by speedboat to Maafushi, around 30–45 minutes across South Malé Atoll (a slower public ferry option is also available). Check in to your guesthouse, then spend the afternoon getting your bearings — the island is small enough to walk end to end in fifteen minutes.
A day at your own pace on Maafushi. Swim and sunbathe at the island's designated Bikini Beach, snorkel out toward the house reef where the coral drops away, and settle into island time. Water-sports operators along the beach can arrange jet skis, parasailing or a fun dive if you'd like to add one.
A morning boat out to a nearby uninhabited sandbank — calm, shallow water perfect for swimming and photos, with a stop to snorkel a coral garden en route. A packed lunch is included on the boat, with a good chance of spotting dolphins on the way back.
A change of pace — a boat to one or two quieter local islands nearby, each with its own character and a slower, more residential feel than Maafushi. It's a good look at everyday Maldivian community life outside the main tourist strip, with time on another beach along the way.
A full or half-day boat excursion focused on marine life — dolphin-watching in the open channel, snorkelling at a turtle point, and, seasonally (roughly August to November), the option to extend toward the whale-shark grounds of South Ari Atoll. In the evening, an optional visit to one of Maafushi's floating bars for sundowners just offshore.
A transfer back to Malé for a guided walk through the capital: the golden-domed Grand Friday Mosque and the older, coral-stone Hukuru Miskiy, the narrow streets around Sultan Park, and the fish market on the northern waterfront, at its liveliest in the late afternoon as the day's catch comes in. Return to Maafushi for a final night.
A final breakfast before your speedboat transfer back to Malé and on to the airport for your onward flight. Prefer to close the trip with a night or two at a resort instead of a guesthouse? We can add a resort day-pass or an overwater-villa finish to this itinerary.

Before you go
Best time to visit
Warm and tropical year-round. The dry northeast monsoon (roughly November–April) brings the calmest seas and best visibility; the wetter southwest monsoon (May–October) is when manta rays and whale sharks are most likely. We'll advise on timing for your dates.
Currency
The Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), though US dollars are widely accepted for tourism. Cards work in most guesthouses and dive shops; carry some cash for smaller cafés and excursion top-ups.
Dress code on local islands
Maldivian local islands are Muslim communities — swimwear is only appropriate on the designated Bikini Beach. Elsewhere on Maafushi and other local islands, cover shoulders and knees, as you would visiting any residential area.
Alcohol
Alcohol isn't sold on inhabited local islands, including Maafushi. Maafushi's floating bars — moored a short shuttle ride offshore — are the local workaround, and resort day-passes are another option if you'd like a drink with your beach day.
Reef-safe habits
Bring reef-safe sunscreen, never stand on or touch coral, and don't feed fish, rays or sharks — no reputable operator does. Water shoes are handy for rocky reef entry points.
Visas & documents
Entry requirements depend on your passport. Most nationalities receive a free 30- or 90-day visa on arrival, but please check based on your nationality before you travel — we're happy to point you in the right direction.

Is this a resort holiday, or something different?
Different, deliberately. This itinerary is based on Maafushi, a local Maldivian island with guesthouse-style accommodation, not a private overwater-villa resort. It's a more affordable, more sociable way to experience the reef, the sandbanks and Maldivian culture. If you'd prefer an overwater-villa resort stay, we have separate resort-based packages built for exactly that — or we can blend a few resort nights into this one.
Is the US$1,099 price per person? What does it cover?
Yes — that's a starting price, per person, for the 7-day itinerary based on twin-share guesthouse accommodation. It covers your stay, daily breakfast, airport and listed boat transfers, the excursions in the itinerary, selected entrance fees and local assistance. The final figure depends on your travel dates, guesthouse choice, group size and whether you'd like it private, so we confirm an exact quote when you enquire.
Will we see whale sharks, dolphins or turtles?
Turtle and dolphin sightings on the listed excursions are common. Whale sharks are seasonal and further afield — the South Ari Atoll grounds are best visited roughly August to November — and, like all wildlife, sightings can never be guaranteed. We'll time your excursions for the best realistic chances based on your travel dates.
Is alcohol available?
Not on the local island itself — the Maldives is a Muslim country and alcohol isn't sold on inhabited local islands, including Maafushi. Floating bars moored just offshore are the popular local workaround, and we can add a resort day-pass to your itinerary if you'd like guaranteed access to a full bar.
Are international flights included?
No — international flights aren't included unless we've specifically stated so in your quote. We can advise on convenient arrival times into Malé and arrange your speedboat transfer to Maafushi to match your flights.
