Nepal's living heritage, valley to lakeside
The Kathmandu Valley holds one of the densest concentrations of living heritage anywhere in Asia — three royal Durbar Squares, two of the world's great Buddhist stupas, and a Hindu temple precinct that has drawn pilgrims for over a thousand years, all within a UNESCO World Heritage listing that spans seven sites. This ten-day journey takes you through the valley at an unhurried pace before crossing to Pokhara, where the Annapurna range rises directly above a lakeside town built for slowing down.
You'll walk the medieval squares of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan, each shaped by centuries of Newar craftsmanship; circle the gilded stupas of Swayambhunath and Boudhanath among monks, pilgrims and prayer wheels; watch sunrise break over the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre peaks from Sarangkot; and spend a day in the Gurung villages of the Annapurna foothills, where Nepal's mountain and hill cultures are closest to the surface.

You're met at Tribhuvan International Airport and transferred to your centrally located hotel, typically in or near Thamel. Settle in and take your first walk through Kathmandu's narrow lanes — incense, prayer flags, and centuries-old shrines tucked between shopfronts — before an early night ahead of tomorrow's sightseeing.
A guided morning through Kathmandu Durbar Square (Hanuman Dhoka), the historic seat of Nepal's Malla and Shah kings. See the Kasthamandap pavilion, the intricately carved palace complex, and — timing permitting — the Kumari Ghar, home to Nepal's living goddess tradition. The afternoon is free for Thamel's shops, cafés and courtyards.
Morning at Swayambhunath, the valley's oldest stupa, reached by 365 steps up a forested hillock west of the city — its painted eyes and panoramic views over Kathmandu are one of the valley's defining sights. In the afternoon, cross to Boudhanath, the largest stupa in Nepal and a major Tibetan Buddhist pilgrimage centre, and walk a clockwise circuit past monasteries, butter-lamp shops and rooftop cafés.
A visit to Pashupatinath, one of the most significant Hindu temple complexes dedicated to Shiva, set on the banks of the sacred Bagmati River (non-Hindu visitors observe from outside the inner temple, per site custom). The rest of the day is yours — an optional cooking class, a massage, or simply more time in Kathmandu's old town.
A day trip to Bhaktapur, widely considered the best-preserved of the valley's three royal cities. Wander the 55-Window Palace, the five-tiered Nyatapola temple — Nepal's tallest pagoda — and lanes still lined with potters' wheels and woodcarvers, largely closed to traffic and easy to explore on foot.
A morning in Patan (Lalitpur), the valley's artisan capital, for its own Durbar Square, Newar metalwork and courtyard temples — many still active as working ateliers. After lunch, transfer to Pokhara [[CONFIRM: road, ~6–7 hours, or domestic flight ~25 minutes — see Good to Know]] and settle into your lakeside hotel for the evening.
A boat across Phewa Lake to the hillside World Peace Pagoda, built by Japanese Buddhist monks, for panoramic views over the lake, Pokhara city and the Annapurna range beyond. Return via the lakeside promenade, with the afternoon free for the cafés and shops of the Lakeside strip.
A pre-dawn drive to Sarangkot for sunrise over the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre peaks — one of Nepal's signature views. Afterwards, a moderate day-hike from Kande through forest and terraced fields to Australian Camp and the Gurung village of Dhampus, with mountain views throughout and lunch in the village before returning to Pokhara.
Transfer back to Kathmandu [[CONFIRM: road or domestic flight, matching Day 6]]. The rest of the day is free for last-minute shopping in Thamel or Patan's handicraft shops, or an optional add-on such as a Nagarkot sunrise excursion or a traditional Newari dinner.

Before you go
Best time to visit
Autumn (Sept–Nov) and spring (Mar–May) offer the clearest mountain views and are peak season. Winter is cooler but often clear; the summer monsoon (Jun–Aug) brings rain and haze that can obscure the Annapurna views on Day 8.
Currency
The Nepalese Rupee (NPR). Cards are accepted in Kathmandu and Pokhara's hotels and larger shops; carry cash for temple donations, small vendors and rural stops like Dhampus.
Kathmandu ↔ Pokhara transfer
This itinerary defaults to a scenic road transfer (roughly 6–7 hours). A domestic flight (around 25 minutes) can usually be added as an upsell for travellers short on time — ask us for current pricing when you enquire.
Day 8 fitness level
The Dhampus / Australian Camp day is a moderate walk on stone-paved trails through forest and farmland — no trekking experience needed, but it does involve several hours of uphill and downhill walking. Let us know if you'd prefer a gentler lakeside alternative for that day.
What to pack
Layered clothing (temples and mornings can be cool even when midday is warm), comfortable walking shoes for temple squares and the Day 8 hike, modest cover-ups for religious sites, and a light rain layer outside the dry season.

Does this trip include travel to Bhutan?
No. This itinerary is entirely within Nepal — Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Patan and Pokhara. "Bhutan-style" in the name refers to the shared Himalayan Buddhist architectural tradition (pagoda roofs, gilded stupas, prayer wheels) found across Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet — not to a stop in Bhutan itself. If you'd like an itinerary that genuinely includes Bhutan, tell us and we'll price that separately.
Is the US$1,299 price per person? What does it cover?
Yes — that's a starting price, per person, for the 10-day itinerary based on twin-share accommodation. It covers your hotels, daily breakfast, airport and listed transfers, the sightseeing in the itinerary, selected entrance fees and local assistance. The final figure depends on your travel dates, hotel choice, group size, and whether you take the Kathmandu–Pokhara road transfer or the domestic flight upsell, so we confirm an exact quote when you enquire.
How much walking is involved, especially on Day 8?
Most days involve easy-to-moderate walking around temple squares and stupas. Day 8, the Dhampus and Australian Camp hike, is the most physical day — several hours on stone-paved trails through forest and terraced fields — but it's designed for travellers with no trekking experience, not seasoned hikers. Tell us your fitness level and we can adjust the pace or offer a gentler alternative.
Do I need a visa for Nepal?
Most nationalities can get a visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, but requirements do vary by passport. Please verify based on your own nationality before you travel — we're glad to point you to the right official source.
