Overview

Two cities, one journey through the north

Northern Thailand moves at a different pace to the south's beaches — cooler hill air, centuries-old temple culture, and a landscape of forested mountains and rice valleys. This seven-day journey uses two bases, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, to bring together the region's essential sights without the back-and-forth of planning it yourself.

You'll walk the moated old city of Chiang Mai and climb to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep for views over the valley, stand on the summit of Doi Inthanon — Thailand's highest point — among cloud forest and waterfalls, then head north to Chiang Rai for two of the country's most photographed temples: the dazzling White Temple and the striking Blue Temple. The trip closes at the Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet at the Mekong.

Airport transfers, centrally located accommodation, daily breakfast, intercity transfers and guided sightseeing are arranged for you. Prefer it fully private, extended by a few days, or built around a hill-tribe village stay? Every element here can be tailored — this itinerary is the starting point, not the ceiling.

Highlights

What you'll actually see

Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple

An ongoing contemporary art project by Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, opened to visitors in 1997 — a dazzling white and mirrored-glass structure just outside Chiang Rai, unlike any other temple in the country.

Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai's mountain temple

A sacred site since the 14th century, reached by a 300-step naga staircase (or a funicular for those who'd rather skip it), with a gold chedi and sweeping views back over the Chiang Mai valley.

Doi Inthanon, the roof of Thailand

At 2,565 metres, the highest point in the country — cool, cloud-forested and dotted with waterfalls, hill-tribe markets and the twin royal pagodas built for the King and Queen's 60th birthdays.

The Golden Triangle

The point where the Ruak and Mekong rivers meet and Thailand, Myanmar and Laos come together — once the heart of the region's opium trade, now a riverside viewpoint with museums telling that history.

1Day
Arrival — Welcome to Chiang Mai

You're met at Chiang Mai International Airport and transferred to your centrally located hotel, within easy walking distance of the old city walls. Chiang Mai Old City & Doi Suthep — Temples above and within the walls

A morning guided walk through the old city's moated square — its temple compounds, city gates and market lanes — followed by the drive up to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai's most revered temple, perched on the mountainside above town. Climb (or ride the funicular past) the naga staircase to the golden chedi, then take in the views over the valley before returning to the city.

Doi Inthanon National Park — Thailand's highest point

A full day in Doi Inthanon National Park, home to Thailand's highest peak. Visit the twin royal pagodas with their terraced gardens, walk a short forest trail through cloud forest, and stop at cascading waterfalls and a hill-tribe market on the way down. Cooler air and mountain scenery make this one of the most refreshing days of the trip.

Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai — The White and Blue Temples

Depart Chiang Mai by private road transfer to Chiang Rai, breaking the drive at two of northern Thailand's most striking modern temples: Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple, a dazzling contemporary art installation in temple form, and Wat Rong Suea Ten, the Blue Temple, known for its vivid indigo and gold interior. Arrive in Chiang Rai in the afternoon and settle into your hotel.

Golden Triangle & Chiang Saen — Where three countries meet

A day trip north to Sop Ruak, where the Ruak and Mekong rivers converge and the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet — the historic heart of the Golden Triangle's opium trade, now home to viewpoints and museums on that history. Continue to the riverside town of Chiang Saen, with its ancient temple ruins and city walls, before returning to Chiang Rai. A short optional boat crossing to Don Sao island on the Laos side can be arranged locally.

Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai — Return & free evening

Depart Chiang Rai by road transfer back to Chiang Mai, with the morning free to revisit a favourite corner of the city or add on the Black House Museum before you go. Good to Know

Before you go

Best time to visit

Northern Thailand is coolest and driest from November to February, and it's the season most travellers pick for Doi Inthanon and Doi Suthep. March to May is hot and can bring seasonal haze; the wetter months run roughly June to October — we'll advise on timing for your dates when you enquire.

Currency

The Thai Baht (THB). Cards are widely accepted in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai hotels and malls; carry some cash for temple entrance fees, markets, hill-tribe stalls and small vendors.

It gets cool up the mountain

Doi Inthanon's summit can be noticeably cool, occasionally near freezing on winter mornings — a real contrast to Chiang Mai city. Pack a light jacket or fleece layer even if the rest of the trip is warm.

Temple etiquette

Cover shoulders and knees at all temples, remove shoes before entering buildings, and keep your head lower than any Buddha image or monk when seated. A light scarf or sarong is handy if you're caught in shorts or a sleeveless top.

What to pack

Light, breathable clothing for the cities, a warmer layer for Doi Inthanon, comfortable walking shoes, sun protection and a reusable water bottle. Modest cover-ups are essential for temple visits.

Visas & documents

Entry requirements depend on your passport. Many nationalities enter Thailand visa-free for short stays, but please check based on your nationality before you travel — we're happy to point you to the right official source.

Questions

Good to have answered

Is the US$899 price per person? What does it cover?

Yes — that's a starting price, per person, for the 7-day itinerary based on twin-share accommodation. It covers your hotels, daily breakfast, airport and intercity transfers, the sightseeing in the itinerary, selected entrance fees and local assistance. The final figure depends on your travel dates, hotel choice, group size and whether you'd like it private, so we confirm an exact quote when you enquire.

How do we get between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai?

By private road transfer, roughly three hours, with stops at the White and Blue Temples built into the drive so it doubles as sightseeing rather than dead travel time. If you'd prefer to fly one leg to save time, let us know and we can price that as an alternative.

Are international flights included?

No — international flights aren't included unless we've specifically stated so in your quote. Most travellers fly into Chiang Mai via Bangkok; we can advise on convenient routings and arrange your airport transfers to match your flights.

Can this itinerary be customised or run privately?

Absolutely — this is a template, not a fixed package. Run it fully private, add nights in either city, extend into a hill-tribe village stay, or link it to a wider Thailand trip. Tell us what you have in mind and we'll shape it around you.

How much walking and physical activity is involved?

It's a moderate, comfortable trip for most travellers. The old city and both temple towns involve easy strolling; Doi Suthep has a staircase of roughly 300 steps (or a funicular alternative); and Doi Inthanon's short nature trails are gentle underfoot, though the mountain air is thinner and cooler than you'll be used to at sea level.

Do I need a visa for Thailand?

It depends on your nationality. Many travellers enter Thailand visa-free for short stays, but requirements change, so please verify based on your own passport before you travel — we're glad to point you to the right official source.

How do I book or get a quote?

Send us an enquiry with your rough dates and traveller numbers and we'll come back with a tailored quote and next steps. There's no obligation, and no payment needed to get a proposal.
