Its southern reef shelf, protected since 2009 as the South Ari Marine Protected Area, is the only documented year-round resident whale shark aggregation on the planet. Researchers have photo-identified several hundred individual sharks here since 2006, and published sighting rates run at roughly 70–90% of excursions in any given month — there's no "season" to plan around.

What you'll actually see
Whale sharks, resident year-round
Juvenile whale sharks — typically 4 to 8 metres — cruise South Ari's outer reef shelf every month of the year, close enough to the surface for snorkellers as well as divers. Sightings are very likely, not guaranteed, but this is as reliable as whale shark encounters get anywhere on Earth.
Manta rays on the same reefs
South Ari's channels and cleaning stations, particularly on the western side, are a reliable spot for reef manta rays alongside the whale sharks — no separate trip required.
Sea turtles & a living house reef
Green and hawksbill turtles are regular sights on South Ari's reefs, alongside reef sharks, colourful soft corals and a thriving fish population — easy to reach without a dedicated boat trip.
Snorkel or dive — your choice
Whale sharks stay near the surface here, so no certification is needed to meet them. For certified divers, the same waters and drop-offs rank among the Maldives' best diving.

You're met at Velana International Airport, Malé, and transferred on to South Ari Atoll — by seaplane or a short domestic flight and speedboat, depending on your accommodation. Settle in on arrival and ease into island time; the reef is right there whenever you're ready.
Your first dedicated whale shark excursion, by snorkel boat or dive vessel, guided by local marine specialists who know where the sharks have been feeding recently. Encounters follow Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme guidelines — a respectful distance, small groups, no touching — so the experience stays safe for both you and the shark.
A second excursion to South Ari's manta cleaning stations and channels, followed by time on the house reef for turtles and reef fish. A flexible day, easy to spend mostly in and around the water.
A second dedicated whale shark search, since the resident population means more time on the water improves your odds without needing a different location. The afternoon is left open — a sandbank visit, a sunset cruise, or simply resting.

Best time to visit
Whale sharks are resident year-round, so there's no closed season. The dry season (roughly December–April) tends to bring clearer surface visibility; the wetter months (May–November) bring plankton blooms that can concentrate feeding activity. We'll advise on conditions for your dates.
Currency
The Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), though US dollars and cards are widely accepted at resorts and guesthouses across South Ari. Carry a little local cash for smaller purchases on inhabited islands.

South Ari has the most reliable whale shark sightings anywhere in the world — published research puts it at roughly 70–90% of excursions — but these are wild animals, and no single trip out can be promised a shark. Multiple excursions, as built into this itinerary, meaningfully improve your odds.
What to pack
Reef-safe sunscreen (chemical sunscreens are restricted in Maldivian marine protected areas), a rash guard for sun and stinger protection while snorkelling, swimwear, and light, breathable clothing for the islands themselves.
Swimming ability
Whale shark and manta excursions are swimmer-only — you'll need to be a confident swimmer comfortable in open water, wearing a mask, snorkel and fins. Life jackets and guide support are provided; scuba certification is not required for the snorkel excursions.

Do I need to be a certified diver?
No. Whale sharks in South Ari cruise near the surface, so the standard — and often best — way to meet them is snorkelling, not diving. You'll need to be a confident swimmer, but no dive certification is required. If you are a certified diver, the same waters offer some of the Maldives' best diving as an optional add-on.
Is this trip suitable for children?
It can be, depending on age and swimming ability — most whale shark excursion operators set a minimum age (commonly around 8) and require confident, unassisted swimming. Tell us the ages of any children travelling and we'll confirm the right operator and any age restrictions before booking.
Are international flights included?
