Overview

A week built around your dosha, not a checklist

Sri Lanka has practised Ayurveda for centuries alongside its own indigenous Hela Wedakama tradition, and the island's coast is now home to some of the most established wellness resorts in South Asia. This seven-day retreat is built to actually slow you down — not a spa afternoon bolted onto a sightseeing trip, but a week where treatments, rest and gentle exploration are the itinerary.

It opens with a private consultation to assess your constitution — the Vata, Pitta and Kapha balance Ayurvedic medicine is built around — so the massages, oils and daily rhythm that follow are chosen for you, not off a generic spa menu. From your base on the Bentota coast you'll also step outside the resort twice: a boat safari through the mangroves and islands of the Madu River, and a guided walk through a highland spice garden where the herbs behind your treatments are grown. The retreat closes with two nights in the cooler hill capital of Kandy, beside its landmark lake.

Airport transfers, accommodation, daily breakfast and the core wellness sessions are arranged for you. Want more nights on treatments, a specific resort, or a dedicated Ayurvedic doctor throughout? Every element here can be tailored — this itinerary is the starting point, not the ceiling.

Highlights

What the week is actually built around

A private dosha consultation, first

Before any treatment, an Ayurvedic practitioner assesses your constitution — the balance of Vata, Pitta and Kapha that Ayurvedic medicine works from — so the oils, massage style and pace of your week are chosen for you rather than picked off a fixed spa list.

Daily traditional treatments in Bentota

Three full days on the Bentota coast built around classical therapies — Abhyanga oil massage, Shirodhara's warm forehead oil stream, and herbal steam — interspersed with rest, not rushed between sightseeing stops.

Madu River mangrove safari

A boat safari through the Madu Ganga's mangrove channels and islands near Bentota — watching for water monitors, monkeys and kingfishers, with a stop at a temple islet and a look at how cinnamon is prepared locally.

A spice garden built for Ayurveda

En route to Kandy, a guided walk through a highland spice garden growing cinnamon, cardamom, pepper and cloves — the same plants behind many of the oils and preparations used in your treatments.

Day by Day

Your 7-day itinerary

Deliberately unhurried — three full wellness days on the coast, two excursions with a purpose, and two calmer days in the hills.

1Day
Arrival — Welcome to Colombo

You're met at Bandaranaike International Airport and transferred to your Colombo hotel. After settling in, an easy first evening — the gilded stupa and calm grounds of the Gangaramaya Temple beside Beira Lake are an unhurried way to arrive, before an early night ahead of tomorrow's transfer south.

2Day
Colombo to Bentota — Beginning your retreat

A scenic transfer south along the coast, roughly 1.5–2 hours, to your Bentota retreat. After check-in, your private dosha consultation with an Ayurvedic practitioner sets the plan for the days ahead, followed by a welcome Abhyanga oil massage to ease you into the week's rhythm.

3Day
Full Wellness Day — Treatments & rest

A day with nowhere to be. Morning and afternoon treatments drawn from your consultation — commonly Abhyanga and Shirodhara — paired with gentle yoga or breathing sessions where offered, and free time on the beach or by the pool between sessions.

4Day
Madu River Safari — Mangroves, islands, cinnamon

A short drive to nearby Balapitiya for a boat safari through the Madu River's mangrove channels and roughly 64 islands — watching for water monitor lizards, monkeys, cormorants and kingfishers, stopping at a Buddhist temple islet and a spot where cinnamon preparation is demonstrated. Return to your retreat for an afternoon treatment.

5Day
Bentota to Kandy — Via a highland spice garden

Transfer inland and up into the hills toward Kandy, roughly 3–4 hours depending on the route. Along the way, a guided walk through a spice garden near Matale, where a demonstrator shows cinnamon, cardamom, pepper and cloves growing and explains their Ayurvedic uses — a direct link to the oils used in your treatments. Arrive in Kandy for an evening walk around Kandy Lake.

6Day
Kandy — Cooler air, quieter pace

Kandy's elevation brings noticeably cooler mornings — a good setting for a gentle wellness session before the day opens up. Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic beside the lake, then spend the afternoon at your own pace: a further treatment at your hotel, a lakeside walk, or simply resting before departure.

Departure — Until next time

A final breakfast, then a transfer back toward Colombo for your onward flight — roughly 3–4 hours from Kandy, timed to your departure. If you'd like to extend, we can add further nights of treatments in Bentota or Kandy, or link this retreat to Sri Lanka's south coast or hill country.

Good to Know

Before you go

Best time to visit

Sri Lanka's west and south coasts, including Bentota, are warm and tropical year-round, with a wetter southwest monsoon roughly May to September. The drier months are generally more comfortable for a coastal retreat — we'll advise on timing for your dates when you enquire.

Currency

The Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Cards are widely accepted at resorts and in Colombo and Kandy; carry some cash for local excursions, small vendors and spice-garden purchases.

Ayurveda is a wellness tradition, not medicine

Treatments on this retreat are traditional Ayurvedic wellness practices, not medical care. If you have a health condition, are pregnant, or take regular medication, tell your consultation practitioner and your own doctor before booking — some treatments and herbal preparations aren't suitable for everyone.

What to pack

Light, breathable clothing that's easy to change out of for treatments, swimwear, a light jumper for cooler Kandy evenings, and comfortable sandals. Most resorts provide treatment robes; check with yours on anything else recommended.

Pace & expectations

This is a slow itinerary by design — three full wellness days with limited sightseeing, not a packed touring schedule. If you'd like more excursions worked in around your treatments, tell us and we'll rebalance the week.

Visas & documents

Entry requirements depend on your passport. Many nationalities can apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before arrival, but please check based on your nationality — we're happy to point you to the right official source.

Questions

Good to have answered

Is the US$999 price per person? What does it cover?

Yes — that's a starting price, per person, for the 7-day itinerary based on twin-share accommodation. It covers your hotels, daily breakfast, airport and listed transfers, the sightseeing in the itinerary, selected entrance fees and local assistance. The exact treatment programme, resort choice and final figure depend on your travel dates, group size and whether you'd like it private, so we confirm a tailored quote when you enquire.

Are the Ayurvedic treatments medical care?

No. This is a wellness and relaxation retreat built around traditional Ayurvedic practices — it isn't medical treatment and isn't intended to diagnose, treat or cure any condition. If you have a health condition, are pregnant, or take regular medication, please mention this at your consultation and check with your own doctor before booking, as some treatments and herbal preparations aren't suitable for everyone.

What exactly happens at the dosha consultation?

On arrival in Bentota, a practitioner asks about your health, lifestyle and how you're feeling to assess your constitution across Ayurveda's three doshas — Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Your daily treatments and diet suggestions for the retreat are then built around that assessment rather than a fixed spa menu.

Are international flights included?

No — international flights aren't included unless we've specifically stated so in your quote. Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport is well connected across Asia, the Middle East and beyond; we can advise on convenient routings and arrange your airport transfers to match your flights.

Can this itinerary be customised or run privately?

Absolutely — this is a template, not a fixed package. Extend the wellness portion, choose a specific resort, add a dedicated Ayurvedic doctor throughout, or swap in more sightseeing around Kandy. Tell us what you have in mind and we'll shape it around you.

Do I need a visa for Sri Lanka?

It depends on your nationality. Many travellers can apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) online before arrival, but requirements change, so please verify based on your own passport before you travel — we're glad to point you to the right official source.

How do I book or get a quote?

Send us an enquiry with your rough dates, traveller numbers and any health considerations we should flag to the resort, and we'll come back with a tailored quote and next steps. There's no obligation, and no payment needed to get a proposal.
