The easiest introduction to Sri Lanka's coast
Sri Lanka's south-west coast is where most first-time visitors fall for the country — warm, calm water, wide golden beaches, and a coastline that shifts in character every hour or so of driving. This six-day journey uses that coast as the whole itinerary, pairing genuine beach time with the two stops that give it context: Bentota's laid-back river resort scene and the walled Dutch fort town of Galle.
You'll settle into Bentota first — a calmer, resort-style stretch known for its beach and its river, before heading south to Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage old town of coral-stone ramparts, boutique shops and ocean views, en route to the wider south-coast beaches around Unawatuna. Along the way there's the option to visit a turtle hatchery and watch the region's iconic stilt fishermen at work.
Airport transfers, centrally located beachfront accommodation, daily breakfast and the sightseeing above are arranged for you. Prefer more beach and less itinerary, an extra night, or a private car throughout? Every element here can be tailored — this is the starting point, not the ceiling.

Bentota's beach and river
A wide, gently shelving beach backed by resort hotels, plus the Bentota River running alongside it — a relaxed base to ease into the trip with genuine downtime built in from day one.
Galle Fort, a living UNESCO old town
A 17th-century Dutch-built fort on a headland — coral-stone ramparts you can walk end to end, a lighthouse, cobbled streets of boutique shops, cafés and colonial-era villas, with ocean views from almost every angle.
A sea turtle hatchery on the coast road
A conservation-run hatchery near Kosgoda where rescued eggs are incubated and hatchlings released back into the ocean — a short, worthwhile stop between Bentota and Galle.
The south-coast beaches around Unawatuna
Golden sand, calmer swimming than much of the coast, and the region's famous stilt fishermen perched over the shallows at sunrise and sunset — one of Sri Lanka's most photographed traditions.
Your 6-day itinerary
A beach-forward pace — real downtime either side of one full sightseeing day — with breakfast daily and all listed transfers included.
You're met at Bandaranaike International Airport and transferred south along the coast to Bentota, roughly a 1.5 to 2-hour drive. Check into your beachfront hotel and spend the rest of the day settling in — the beach and the calm Bentota River are both right there.
A full free day in Bentota to set the pace you want — the beach, the pool, or an optional river safari or water-sports session along the Bentota River (mangroves, birdlife and a slower side of the resort strip). No fixed plan today, by design.
Check out of Bentota and head south along the coast, stopping at a sea turtle hatchery near Kosgoda before continuing into Galle. Spend the afternoon walking the fort's ramparts, lighthouse and old town streets, then continue on to your south-coast hotel near Unawatuna for the next two nights.
A free day on the beaches around Unawatuna — swimming, sunbathing or simply reading in the shade of the palms. Late afternoon, head to a nearby stretch of coast to watch the traditional stilt fishermen perched on their poles above the shallows, best seen around sunset.
Another unstructured day to enjoy the coast at your own pace. Depending on your dates, an optional early-morning whale-watching trip from nearby Mirissa can be added. In the evening, transfer back up the coast toward Colombo for your final night.
Enjoy a final breakfast and, depending on your flight, a little free time — a walk along Galle Face Green in Colombo is an easy way to fill a spare hour. You're then transferred to the airport for your onward journey, or, if you'd like to extend, we can add nights on the coast or link this trip to the Cultural Triangle or the hill country.

Before you go
Best time to visit
The south-west coast is driest and calmest roughly December to March, which is also peak season. The south-west monsoon (May–September) brings rougher seas and rain, and generally favours the island's east coast instead — we'll advise on timing for your dates when you enquire.
Currency
The Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Cards are widely accepted at hotels and larger restaurants along the coast; carry some cash for local cafés, markets and small vendors.
Sea conditions vary
Currents and undertows can be stronger than they look, particularly outside the sheltered bays. Swim on patrolled or clearly calm stretches, follow any flag warnings, and ask your hotel about conditions on the day.
Visiting Galle Fort
The fort is a living town, not a museum — people live and work inside the ramparts. Dress and behave respectfully, particularly near the mosque and churches within the walls, and expect narrow streets best explored on foot.
What to pack
Light, breathable clothing, swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and a light cover-up for temples and the fort's religious sites. A rash guard is useful if you plan to snorkel or spend long hours in the sun.

Is the US$699 price per person? What does it cover?
Yes — that's a starting price, per person, for the 6-day itinerary based on twin-share accommodation. It covers your hotels, daily breakfast, airport and listed transfers, the sightseeing in the itinerary, selected entrance fees and local assistance. The final figure depends on your travel dates, hotel choice, group size and whether you'd like it private, so we confirm an exact quote when you enquire.
How much of this trip is actually free beach time?
Most of it. Days 2, 4 and 5 have no fixed sightseeing at all — they're built for the beach, the pool or simply doing nothing. Only Day 3 is a structured sightseeing day, covering the turtle hatchery and Galle Fort as you transfer between the two coastal bases.
Is whale watching included?
No — it's an optional, seasonal add-on from Mirissa, generally available from around November to April, and it's not part of the base price. Ask us when you enquire and we'll confirm availability and pricing for your dates.
Are international flights included?
No — international flights aren't included unless we've specifically stated so in your quote. Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport is well connected across Asia and the Middle East; we'll arrange your airport transfers to match your flights.
Can this itinerary be customised or run privately?
Absolutely — this is a template, not a fixed package.
