This eight-day itinerary uses that compactness deliberately, moving from Colombo up into the Cultural Triangle, across to the hill country, and back down to the coast — without the long transfer days that wear families out.
You'll climb (or admire, no obligation) the 5th-century rock fortress of Sigiriya, watch rescued elephants bathe and feed at Pinnawala, step inside Kandy's Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, and walk through the tea estates of Nuwara Eliya — Sri Lanka's cool "Little England" hill station. The trip closes with two unhurried days on the beach at Bentota, with a river safari through the mangroves for the kids and genuinely nothing scheduled beyond that.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress
A UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Asia's great ancient sights — a 5th-century royal citadel built atop a 200-metre granite outcrop, reached via the Lion's Paw staircase, ancient frescoes and a mirror wall en route to sweeping views from the summit. The climb is optional; the base gardens and museum are rewarding on their own.
Rescued elephants at Pinnawala
A sanctuary since 1975 caring for orphaned and injured elephants, with viewing of the herd at feeding and bathing times in the nearby river — reliably one of the best-loved stops on the whole trip for kids.
Kandy's Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
A UNESCO World Heritage Buddhist temple in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy, enshrining what tradition holds to be a tooth relic of the Buddha — one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Buddhist world, alongside a Kandyan cultural dance performance most evenings.
Tea country in Nuwara Eliya
Sri Lanka's cool-climate hill station, over 1,800 metres up, ringed by working tea estates. A working factory tour shows the leaf-to-cup process, and the town's colonial-era architecture and gardens give the whole family a genuine change of pace and temperature.

You're met at Bandaranaike International Airport and transferred to your hotel. With most long-haul arrivals landing in the early hours, today is deliberately unstructured — settle in, rest, and adjust, with an easy evening stroll along Galle Face Green if energy allows.
Depart Colombo for the Cultural Triangle, breaking the drive at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage to watch the resident herd bathe and feed by the river. Continue on to Sigiriya and check in to your hotel in the late afternoon, with the rock fortress itself visible from the grounds of many properties in the area.
An early start beats both the heat and the crowds at Sigiriya, where the climb up through the Lion's Paw staircase leads to the ruined royal palace and its views over the surrounding plains — the frescoes and mirror wall are highlights on the way up, and the base gardens work well for anyone who'd rather not climb. In the afternoon, visit the Dambulla Cave Temple, a Buddhist cave complex with over 150 statues and painted ceilings dating back more than two thousand years.
Drive south to Kandy, Sri Lanka's hill capital, stopping at a spice garden near Matale along the way. In Kandy, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic within the royal palace complex, then take an evening stroll around Kandy Lake before a Kandyan cultural dance performance — drumming, traditional costume and the well-known fire-walking finale.
A scenic drive up into the hill country, with the temperature dropping and the landscape turning to rolling tea estates as you climb. Stop at a working tea factory to see the leaf-to-cup process firsthand and sample a fresh cup, then continue to Nuwara Eliya — Sri Lanka's cool-climate "Little England," built up by British planters in the 19th century.
A relaxed morning around Nuwara Eliya — Gregory Lake for a boat ride or a walk around the shore, and the colonial-era post office and racecourse for a look at the town's British-era character — before the transfer down to the coast at Bentota. Settle into your beach hotel for two unhurried nights.
A full day with nothing scheduled beyond what you choose. A boat safari along the Bentota River and its mangroves is an easy family-friendly add-on in the morning, spotting water monitors and birdlife along the banks; the rest of the day is beach, pool and the resort town's water sports on offer.
Enjoy a final breakfast and, depending on your flight time, a last morning by the beach. You're then transferred to Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport for your onward journey — or, if you'd like to extend, we can add nights in Bentota, a wildlife safari at Yala or Udawalawe, or a stop in Galle on the south coast.

Before you go
Best time to visit
The west and south coasts, and the Cultural Triangle, are driest roughly December to March; the hill country stays mild year-round but can turn cool and misty in the evenings. We'll advise on the best window for your travel dates when you enquire.
Currency
The Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Cards are widely accepted in hotels and larger shops in Colombo and tourist towns; carry cash for markets, small vendors and rural stops.
Travelling with kids
Drive times are kept realistic and the pace is one main activity most days. Car seats can be arranged with advance notice — let us know ages when you enquire so we can confirm with the operator.
Temple dress code
Shoulders and knees covered, and shoes removed before entering temples such as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and Dambulla Cave Temple. A light scarf or sarong for the kids is a useful backup.

It's a moderate trip overall. Sigiriya is the most demanding day — around 1,200 steps to the summit, best tackled early to avoid the midday heat — while Kandy, the tea factory and Bentota involve easy strolling. The lowlands and coast are hot and humid year-round; Nuwara Eliya is noticeably cooler, so pack for both.
