The classic route, done properly
Sri Lanka packs an outsized amount of variety into a small island — ancient citadels, hill-country tea estates, a mountain temple holding one of Buddhism's most revered relics, and a Dutch-colonial fort on the Indian Ocean, all within a few hours' drive of each other. This eight-day itinerary is the classic first-time route, built to cover the island's headline sights without the back-and-forth of planning it yourself.
You'll climb the fifth-century rock fortress of Sigiriya, watch the evening rituals at Kandy's Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, ride the celebrated hill-country rail line into Ella for tea plantations and the Nine Arch Bridge, and finish on the ramparts of Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage old town on the southern coast. Between the landmarks, this is also simply a comfortable way to see the country — good hotels, a sensible pace, and someone else handling the logistics.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress
A 5th-century royal citadel built by King Kashyapa atop a 180-metre granite outcrop, complete with water gardens, mirror wall graffiti and celebrated frescoes. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, it's one of Asia's most striking pieces of ancient engineering.
Kandy's Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
Sri Dalada Maligawa, in the heart of Kandy's former royal palace complex, is one of the most venerated Buddhist shrines in the world — home to a relic believed to be the Buddha's left canine tooth, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988.
Hill country & the Nine Arch Bridge
The Kandy–Ella rail corridor is regularly ranked among the world's most scenic train journeys, climbing through tea estates and misty forest before Ella itself — home to the celebrated Nine Arch Bridge, walking trails and cooler mountain air.
Galle Fort
A UNESCO World Heritage old town on Sri Lanka's south coast, first fortified by the Portuguese in 1588 and rebuilt on a grander scale by the Dutch — cobbled streets, colonial-era churches, a working lighthouse, and ocean views from the ramparts.

You're met at Bandaranaike International Airport and transferred to your Colombo hotel. Settle in and rest after your flight, or — if you're up for it — a short evening outing to Galle Face Green, the city's seafront promenade, for street food and your first look at the capital before the trip properly begins tomorrow.
After breakfast, a scenic drive of around four hours north into Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, arriving at your hotel near Sigiriya in time to settle in ahead of tomorrow's climb. The afternoon is free — relax by the pool, or head out to a spice garden or local village for a first taste of rural Sri Lanka.
An early start beats both the heat and the crowds for the climb up Sigiriya — through the water gardens, past the mirror wall and its ancient graffiti, up between the carved lion's paws, and out onto the summit ruins of Kashyapa's 5th-century palace. The afternoon is free; ask about adding an optional village tour by bullock cart and catamaran, or an elephant-back or safari-style excursion in the surrounding countryside.
A roughly three-hour drive south to Kandy, Sri Lanka's hill capital, with an optional stop at a spice garden near Matale on the way. In the evening, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic during the daily puja, then take in a traditional Kandyan dance performance — drumming, costume and fire — a fitting introduction to the city.
A relaxed morning in Kandy — the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya and a stroll around Kandy Lake are the classic picks — before boarding the afternoon train for the ride into the hills. The Kandy–Ella line is one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world, winding past waterfalls and tea estates as the air cools and the views open up, arriving into Ella by early evening. [[CONFIRM]] Rail line status: parts of the upcountry line were damaged in a 2025 cyclone — please confirm current Sri Lanka Railways service before travel; a private road transfer is a straightforward alternative if needed.
A full day to enjoy Ella at its own pace: the walk out to the Nine Arch Bridge, a hike up Little Adam's Peak for panoramic views over the Ella Gap, and time in and around the surrounding tea estates. It's an easy, scenic day best kept flexible — cafés, viewpoints and the cooler mountain air are half the appeal.
A longer transfer — roughly six hours — down from the hills to the south coast, arriving into Galle by mid-afternoon. Once you're settled in, explore Galle Fort at your own pace: the ramparts, the old Dutch quarter, and the lighthouse at Flag Rock Bastion, one of the best spots on the coast to watch the sunset.
A final morning free to wander Galle Fort's cobbled streets, browse its boutiques, or simply enjoy a last Sri Lankan breakfast by the ramparts. You're then transferred to Colombo airport (around two and a half hours) for your onward flight — or, if you'd like to extend, we can add beach nights on the south coast or link this trip to Yala National Park for a safari.

Before you go
Best time to visit
Sri Lanka has two monsoon systems affecting different coasts at different times, so there's rarely a bad time to visit the island as a whole. This route favours the drier window for the west and south coasts (roughly December to March) — we'll advise on timing for your dates when you enquire.
Currency
The Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Cards are widely accepted in Colombo, Kandy and Galle's hotels and restaurants; carry some cash for smaller vendors, tuk-tuks and entrance fees in Sigiriya and Ella.
The Sigiriya climb
It's roughly 1,200 steps to the summit, including some open, steep sections near the top. Comfortable shoes, water and an early start make a real difference — arrive by mid-morning and both the heat and the crowds are noticeably easier to manage.
Temple dress code
Shoulders and knees covered, and shoes (plus socks, in some cases) removed before entering — this applies at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and other religious sites on this route. A light scarf or sarong is an easy way to stay covered without overheating.
Hill-country layers
Ella and Kandy sit at elevation and are noticeably cooler than the coast and Cultural Triangle, especially in the evening. Pack a light jacket or sweater for the hill-country stretch of the trip.

Is the Kandy–Ella train included, and is it guaranteed?
The itinerary is built around this train ride as one of the highlights of the trip, and we book seats where we can. Sri Lanka's upcountry rail network is subject to occasional weather-related disruption, so if the line isn't running on your travel dates, we substitute a private road transfer covering the same route and let you know in advance.
How difficult is the Sigiriya climb?
Moderate — around 1,200 steps to the summit, with some steep, open sections near the top that aren't ideal for anyone with a strong fear of heights. Most travellers manage it comfortably with a few rest stops; going early in the morning keeps both the heat and the queues down.
Are international flights included?
