What makes this route worth it
Sigiriya Rock Fortress
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the ruined 5th-century palace of King Kashyapa, rising some 180 metres above the jungle plain. The climb takes you through symmetrical water gardens, past the mirror wall and its ancient graffiti, and up through a monumental lion-paw gateway to the summit ruins and frescoes.
Kandy, Sri Lanka's cultural capital
Sri Lanka's last royal capital, built around the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and a tranquil man-made lake at its centre. Beyond the temple, Kandy is the base for the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya and an evening of traditional Kandyan dance and drumming.
The hill-country train to Ella
One of the world's most scenic rail journeys, climbing through tea estates, mist and mountain passes on the way to Ella. Once there, Little Adam's Peak and the surrounding tea country make for some of the most photographed views in Sri Lanka.
Galle's colonial ramparts
A UNESCO-listed Dutch fort on the south coast, its 17th-century ramparts, lighthouse and cobbled streets still lived-in rather than preserved behind glass. Sunset from the sea wall, looking back over the fort, is the natural close to the journey.

You're met at Bandaranaike International Airport and driven by private transfer to your Colombo hotel. Settle in and unwind after your flight — the evening is yours, whether that's a walk along Galle Face Green as the sun sets or simply resting up for the days ahead.
A private morning tour of Colombo's landmarks — colonial-era Fort, the waterfront, and the city's markets and temples — before the drive north into Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle. Check in to your Sigiriya-area hotel in the afternoon, with the rock fortress visible from your first evening onward.
An early start to climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress before the heat and the crowds build, taking in the water gardens, the mirror wall and the frescoes on the way to the summit ruins. In the afternoon, visit the Dambulla Cave Temple nearby — the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka, its five caves painted floor to ceiling with Buddhist imagery.
Drive south to Kandy, stopping at a spice garden along the way to see cinnamon, cardamom and pepper growing before they reach a kitchen. In Kandy, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic — the most important Buddhist site in Sri Lanka — and take an evening stroll around Kandy Lake before a traditional Kandyan dance performance.
A morning at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, one of Asia's finest, before boarding the celebrated hill-country train for the ride to Ella — widely considered one of the most scenic rail journeys anywhere, climbing through tea estates, waterfalls and mountain passes. Arrive into Ella by early evening.
A day to explore Ella's hills — a walk up Little Adam's Peak for panoramic tea-country views, a stop at the Nine Arches Bridge, and a visit to a working tea estate and factory to see how Ceylon tea is actually made, with a tasting to finish. The afternoon is left open for relaxing at your hotel.
A private drive south to the coast, arriving in Galle in the afternoon. Spend the rest of the day inside the Dutch fort — walking the 17th-century ramparts, the lighthouse, and the fort's boutique-lined streets — timed to end with sunset over the Indian Ocean from the sea wall.
A final breakfast and, depending on your flight, some free time in Galle Fort before the private transfer back to Bandaranaike International Airport for your onward journey. Prefer to extend along the south coast for a few beach days first? We can add that in at the planning stage.

Before you go
Best time to visit
Sri Lanka has two monsoon systems affecting different coasts at different times, so there's a reasonable window most of the year. The west and south (Colombo, Galle) are typically driest December to March; the hill country (Kandy, Ella) is pleasant year-round but cooler and mistier — we'll advise on timing for your dates.
Currency
The Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Cards are widely accepted in hotels and city restaurants; carry cash for temple donations, tuk-tuks, markets and rural stops.
The Sigiriya climb
Reaching the summit means climbing several hundred steps in the open sun, including a steep final section on metal stairways. It's manageable for most reasonably fit travellers if you go early and pace yourself, but it isn't a gentle stroll — bring water, sun protection and good footwear.
Temple dress code
Shoulders and knees covered, and shoes removed before entering temple grounds — this applies at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Dambulla and elsewhere. Loose, modest layers and a scarf are the easiest way to stay comfortable and compliant throughout the day.
What to pack
Light, breathable clothing for the lowlands, a light layer for cooler hill-country evenings in Ella, comfortable walking shoes for Sigiriya and Little Adam's Peak, and modest cover-ups for temples. A reusable water bottle and sun protection are essentials.

Yes — that's a starting price, per person, for the 8-day itinerary based on twin-share accommodation. It covers your hotels, daily breakfast, airport and listed transfers, the sightseeing in the itinerary, selected entrance fees and local assistance. The final figure depends on your travel dates, hotel category, group size and the level of "luxury" you want, so we confirm an exact quote when you enquire.
Is touring private, or shared with other travellers?
This itinerary is built around private touring — your own vehicle and driver-guide throughout, rather than a shared coach. The hill-country train between Kandy and Ella runs on a shared public service, though we can arrange a reserved observation-car seat where available. Tell us your priorities and we'll confirm exactly what's private at each stage.
What hotel category should I expect on a "Luxury" trip?
The starting price is based on well-regarded 4 to 5-star properties in each location, chosen for character and location as much as star rating. We'll share the specific hotels proposed for your dates before you book, and can upgrade further if you'd like a particular property or brand.
How difficult is the Sigiriya climb?
It's a genuine climb — several hundred steps in open sun, with a steep metal stairway near the top — rather than a flat walk. Most reasonably fit travellers manage it comfortably, especially starting early before the heat builds. If mobility is a concern, tell us and we'll adjust the day or suggest an alternative.
Are international flights included?
No — international flights aren't included unless we've specifically stated so in your quote. Colombo's Bandaranaike Airport is well connected across Asia, the Middle East and beyond; we handle your airport transfers to match whatever flights you book.
