Sri Lanka's hill country and its colonial past — in one loop
This seven-day route follows the classic path from Sri Lanka's coast up into its hill country and back — the itinerary most first-time visitors ask for, and for good reason. It moves from Colombo's harbour-front streets to Kandy's sacred temple, climbs through tea estates to the hill station of Nuwara Eliya, threads the hiking trails around Ella, then drops back down to the Dutch ramparts of Galle on the south coast.
You'll stand inside the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of Buddhism's most revered sites, walk a working tea estate above Nuwara Eliya and see how Ceylon tea is picked and processed, ride a stretch of the celebrated hill-country railway through pine forest and plantation, and spend an afternoon inside the 17th-century walls of Galle Fort — a UNESCO World Heritage site where Portuguese and Dutch colonial architecture still lines the streets.
Airport transfers, centrally located accommodation, daily breakfast and guided sightseeing are arranged for you. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
Kandy's Sri Dalada Maligawa houses what is venerated as a tooth relic of the Buddha, making it one of the most sacred sites in the Buddhist world and a working temple, not a museum. Visit during a puja ceremony for the full sense of its living significance.
A working tea estate & factory
Nuwara Eliya sits at the heart of Ceylon's high-grown tea country. Walk between the bushes with the pickers, then follow the leaf through withering, rolling and firing at a working factory — and taste the difference altitude makes.
The hill-country railway
Regularly ranked among the world's great train journeys, the line between Nanu Oya and Ella climbs and winds through pine forest, waterfalls and open tea country. Wide doorways and window seats make it as much a viewpoint as a way to travel.
Galle Fort's colonial ramparts
Founded by the Portuguese in 1588 and rebuilt on a grand scale by the Dutch from the 1640s, Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the best-preserved European-built fortified city in South Asia — church, lighthouse, and cobbled streets still very much in daily use.
Your 7-day itinerary
A steady climb from coast to hill country and back down again, with breakfast daily and all listed transfers included.
You're met at Bandaranaike International Airport and transferred to your Colombo hotel. Settle in, then ease into the trip with a relaxed evening — the Galle Face Green promenade is a good first taste of the city, with sea breeze, street food carts and a wide ocean horizon to end a long flight on.
A morning orientation through Colombo's older quarters — Fort, Pettah's markets, and a look at the city's colonial-era civic buildings — before a scenic drive inland to Kandy. Check in and take an easy evening walk around Kandy Lake as the city settles into dusk.
A guided visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, followed by the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya — 147 acres of orchid houses, giant fig trees and a mile-long avenue of royal palms. In the evening, a traditional Kandyan dance performance rounds out the city's cultural side.
The road climbs steadily through terraced tea gardens en route to Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka's best-known hill station — nicknamed "Little England" for its Tudor-style post office, manicured Victoria Park and colonial-era bungalows. Stop at a working tea estate and factory along the way to see the leaf picked and processed, then explore Nuwara Eliya's town centre on arrival.
A transfer to Nanu Oya station connects with one of the celebrated hill-country trains for the ride into Ella, passing pine forest, waterfalls and open tea country along the way. On arrival, an easy afternoon walk up Little Adam's Peak — a short, well-marked trail — rewards with sweeping views over the Ella Gap.
A longer drive brings you down out of the hills and along the south coast to Galle. Spend the afternoon inside Galle Fort's 17th-century walls — a guided walk past the Dutch Reformed Church, the old lighthouse and colonial-era mansions, with free time to browse the boutiques and galleries tucked into the ramparts before sunset over the Indian Ocean.
Enjoy a final breakfast and, depending on your flight, a little free time for last-minute shopping in the Fort or a relaxed morning by the water. You're then transferred to Colombo airport for your onward journey — or, if you'd like to extend, we can add beach nights on the south coast or link this trip to a wider Sri Lanka itinerary.

Before you go
Best time to visit
Sri Lanka's two monsoon systems mean somewhere is usually dry. Broadly, December to March suits the hill country and west/south coast best — we'll advise on timing for your exact dates when you enquire.
Currency
The Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Cards are widely accepted in hotels and larger shops in Colombo, Kandy and Galle; carry some cash for tea-estate shops, hill-country stalls and small vendors.
Hill-country climate
Nuwara Eliya and Ella sit well above sea level and can be genuinely cool, especially at night — pack a light jacket or fleece alongside your tropical-weight clothing for the coast.
Temple etiquette
Shoulders and knees covered, shoes removed before entering, and a respectful, quiet manner at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and other active places of worship. We'll brief you before each visit.
What to pack

It covers your hotels, daily breakfast, airport and listed transfers, the sightseeing in the itinerary, selected entrance fees and local assistance. The final figure depends on your travel dates, hotel choice, group size and whether you'd like it private, so we confirm an exact quote when you enquire.
Do we take the train between every hill-country stop?
The signature train leg is Nuwara Eliya (Nanu Oya) to Ella, timed to catch the scenery at its best. Other legs — such as Kandy to Nuwara Eliya — run by private road transfer, which also lets you stop at tea estates along the way. We confirm exact seat bookings ahead of your trip, since the popular hill-country trains sell out.
Are international flights included?
No — international flights aren't included unless we've specifically stated so in your quote. Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport is well connected across Asia, the Middle East and beyond; we can advise on convenient routings and arrange your airport transfers to match your flights.
Can this itinerary be customised or run privately?
