Sri Lanka packs an unusual amount of contrast into a small island, and this seven-day route is built to use that to full advantage. You start in the Cultural Triangle, where 5th-century royal history sits carved into rock and jungle, then move to Kandy's hill-country calm before finishing in Yala — the park with one of the highest densities of leopards anywhere in the world.
You'll climb the frescoed rock fortress of Sigiriya, stand inside the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy — one of Buddhism's most revered sites — and spend a full day on open-top jeep safaris through Yala's scrub and lagoons, tracking leopards, elephants, sloth bears and some of the best birdlife in South Asia. Between them, the drive itself becomes part of the trip: spice gardens, paddy fields, roadside fruit stalls and hill views most visitors never plan for but always remember.
Airport transfers, centrally located accommodation, daily breakfast and guided sightseeing are arranged for you. Sigiriya, the Lion Rock
A UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Asia's most striking ancient monuments — a 200-metre granite outcrop crowned with the ruins of a 5th-century royal palace, reached via water gardens, boulder terraces and the famous mirror wall and frescoes partway up.
The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy houses what is believed to be a tooth relic of the Buddha and is one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the world. Set beside Kandy Lake, it's central to the city's daily rhythm of ritual drumming and evening offerings.
Jeep safaris through Yala
Sri Lanka's most visited national park and, by most counts, home to one of the highest densities of leopards found anywhere on Earth — alongside elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and over 200 recorded bird species across scrub jungle, lagoons and open grassland.
Colombo & the road between
Your arrival city on the Indian Ocean, plus the drive itself — spice gardens near Matale, roadside fruit stalls, paddy fields and the cave temple complex at Dambulla, all woven into the transfers rather than treated as dead time.

You're met at Bandaranaike International Airport and transferred to your Colombo hotel. Settle in, then ease into the island at your own pace — an evening stroll along Galle Face Green, the palm-lined oceanfront promenade in the heart of the city, is the classic first taste of Sri Lanka.
After breakfast, drive north to the Cultural Triangle (roughly 4 hours), breaking the journey at a spice garden near Matale to see cinnamon, cardamom and pepper growing before they reach a kitchen. Arrive in Sigiriya in time to settle in, with the rock fortress visible from your hotel for most of the stay.
An early climb up Sigiriya beats both the heat and the crowds — up past the water gardens, the mirror wall and the famous frescoes, to the lion's paw entrance and the palace ruins at the summit, with views across the surrounding jungle in every direction. In the afternoon, visit the Dambulla Cave Temple complex, Sri Lanka's best-preserved cave-temple site, with five caves of Buddha statues and painted ceilings dating back over two thousand years.
Drive south to Kandy (roughly 3 hours), Sri Lanka's last royal capital, set around its own artificial lake. In the late afternoon, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic within the Royal Palace complex, then take an easy walk along Kandy Lake as the evening cools. An optional traditional Kandyan dance performance is a popular way to round out the evening.
A longer transfer day south to Yala (roughly 5–6 hours), through changing scenery from hill country greenery down to the dry southeast. Check in to your safari-area hotel or lodge in time to rest before the first game drive.
A day built around two open-top 4x4 game drives — early morning and late afternoon — timed to the hours wildlife is most active. Trackers work the scrub jungle, rock outcrops and lagoons of Block I for leopard, elephant, sloth bear, crocodile and a long list of resident and migratory birds, with a relaxed break back at the lodge between drives.
Enjoy a final breakfast, then transfer back toward Colombo for your onward flight . If you'd like to extend, we can add nights on the south coast, in the hill country around Ella, or link this trip to a wider Sri Lanka itinerary.

Before you go
Best time to visit
Sri Lanka's two monsoon systems mean somewhere on the island is usually dry. The southeast — including Yala — is generally driest from roughly February to June and again in September; we'll advise on timing for your dates when you enquire.
Currency
The Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Cards are widely accepted in Colombo and Kandy hotels; carry cash for park fees, spice garden stops, roadside food and small vendors, especially near Yala.
Wildlife is wild
Leopards, elephants and sloth bears in Yala are wild and free-roaming — sightings are common but never guaranteed. Stay seated in the jeep, keep noise down, never encourage a driver off-track, and follow ranger guidance at all times.
Temple etiquette
At the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and Dambulla, cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes and hats before entering, and expect to walk barefoot on some sections — sandals are more practical than lace-up shoes.
What to pack
Light, breathable clothing, good walking shoes for Sigiriya's steps, a hat and sun protection, a light layer for early-morning safari drives, insect repellent and a reusable water bottle. Modest cover-ups for temple visits.

Yes — that's a starting price, per person, for the 7-day itinerary based on twin-share accommodation. It covers your hotels, daily breakfast, airport and listed transfers, the sightseeing in the itinerary, selected entrance fees and local assistance. The final figure depends on your travel dates, hotel choice, group size and whether you'd like it private, so we confirm an exact quote when you enquire.
Will we definitely see a leopard in Yala?
We can't promise it — leopards are wild, free-roaming animals, and no responsible operator guarantees sightings. That said, Yala has one of the highest leopard densities of any park in the world, and two full game drives with an experienced tracker on Day 6 give you a strong chance. Elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and a wide range of birdlife are seen far more consistently.
Are international flights included?
No — international flights aren't included unless we've specifically stated so in your quote. Most travellers fly into Bandaranaike International Airport near Colombo; we can advise on convenient routings and arrange your airport transfers to match your flights.
Can this itinerary be customised or run privately?

How much walking and physical activity is involved?
It's a moderate trip overall, with one demanding day. Sigiriya involves a steady climb of several hundred steps, some open and exposed, which takes most visitors 1.5–2 hours round trip. Dambulla and the Temple of the Tooth involve easy walking. Safari days are spent seated in the jeep, with only short walks at rest stops. Tell us about any concerns and we'll plan around them.
