Just outside the city, Sarnath adds an entirely different layer of history. It was here, in the Deer Park, that the Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment — the event that founded the Buddhist Sangha. The Dhamek Stupa still stands on the spot, and the Ashoka Pillar's Lion Capital, unearthed nearby, became independent India's national emblem. Kashi Vishwanath Temple
One of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva and the spiritual centre of the city, its gold-plated spire visible across Varanasi — now linked directly to the ghats by the modern Vishwanath Corridor.

You're met at Varanasi's Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport and transferred to your centrally located hotel. In the evening, walk down to Dashashwamedh Ghat for your first sight of the Ganga Aarti — the nightly ceremony of fire, bells and chant that has drawn pilgrims here for generations.
A pre-dawn start for a rowboat ride along the ghats as the sun comes up — pilgrims bathing, floating lamps, and the skyline of temples and palaces lit gold. Back on land, a guided walk through Varanasi's old town takes in Kashi Vishwanath Temple and the narrow lanes around it, with breakfast at your hotel along the way.
A short drive out to Sarnath, where the Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. You'll see the towering Dhamek Stupa, the ruins of the Dharmarajika Stupa and Ashoka Pillar, and the on-site museum housing the original Lion Capital — the emblem now at the centre of the Indian flag. The Deer Park itself remains a quiet, contemplative space. Return to Varanasi in the afternoon, with the evening free.
Enjoy a final breakfast and, depending on your flight, a little free time for a last stroll along the ghats or some silk and handicraft shopping. Before you go
Best time to visit
October to March brings cooler, clearer weather and is generally the most comfortable window for sightseeing and early starts. Summers (April–June) are very hot; the monsoon (July–September) brings humidity and occasional flooding of the lower ghats.
Currency
The Indian Rupee (INR / ₹). Cards are accepted in hotels and larger shops; carry cash for boat rides, the old city's markets and small vendors.
Dress & etiquette
Varanasi is a deeply sacred city — modest, conservative clothing (shoulders and knees covered) is expected at temples and on the ghats. Shoes come off before entering most temples.
Manikarnika & cremation ghats
Two of Varanasi's ghats are active cremation sites. They can be viewed respectfully from a distance during a boat ride, but photography there is considered deeply inappropriate and should be avoided — this is a sacred, not a tourist, moment for the families present.
Getting around
The old city's lanes are narrow and largely closed to cars — expect to walk, or travel by cycle-rickshaw. Comfortable, closed shoes make the ghats and lanes far easier going.

Is Varanasi appropriate for first-time visitors to India?
Yes — it's intense in the best sense, but very manageable with a guide. Having transfers, a knowledgeable local guide and your sightseeing arranged in advance removes most of the friction first-time visitors worry about, while still giving you the full, unfiltered experience of the ghats.
What about the cremation ghats — is it respectful to visit?
Cremation at Manikarnika and Harishchandra ghats is a normal, ongoing part of daily life in Varanasi, not a spectacle staged for visitors. Viewing respectfully from a boat at a distance is accepted; photography of the cremations themselves is not, and our guides will make sure you know where that line is.
Are international flights included?
